Life in Sunrise Valley is tranquil, but beyond its borders lies certain death. A dangerous black fog looms outside the village, but its inhabitants are kept safe by an ingenious machine known as the dam. And then this brilliant inventor did the unthinkable: he walked into the fog and was never seen again. Now Pig is the dam keeper. Except for his best friend, Fox, and the town bully, Hippo, few are aware of his tireless efforts. Now Pig, Fox, and Hippo must face the greatest danger imaginable: the world on the other side of the dam.

Young Pig lives in Sunrise Valley, but his world is filled with darkness in The Dam Keeper , the first of three graphic novels based on a Oscar-nominated short film. This riveting new story begins five years after the events in the film, focusing on an epic journey undertaken by Pig, his best and only friend, Fox, and her friend Hippo. Pig is ostracized in his village, yet he keeps the town safe by operating an ingenious dam that his father built to keep a dark, deadly fog at bay.
Pig, meanwhile, has become the self-sufficient, albeit lonely, dam keeper. Pig is irritated, however, when Fox brings Hippo to see the dam. During the visit a sudden tidal wave of fog blasts Pig, Fox and Hippo into the dangerous, desolate world beyond the dam, and they must band together to find their way back to safety before another wave of fog returns.
The stakes are high, as is the electric tension—this is by no means a book for the faint of heart. That said, Pig, Fox, and even the bullying Hippo are cute, lovable characters that will appeal to older elementary and middle grade students. Within its epic atmosphere, The Dam Keeper explores themes like fear, loneliness, friendship, bravery and bullying in complex, understated ways.
Did Pig catch sight of him in the wilderness, leading the trio forward, or was he dreaming? Can the group trust a strange new creature named Van who promises to take them back to Sunrise Valley? MartinHafer 8 February The Dam Keeper is my choice for the best of the animated shorts and I think the quality difference between this and the rest of the films is pretty obvious. Like The Bigger Picture, this one has the look of a painting--which is quite unusual for an animated film. But the paintings are of a much higher quality and there is an amazing artistry that set this one apartit just looks great. The story is very sentimental and sweet--and not in way that is cloying or over the top.

The Dam Keeper: Return from the Shadows
Sunrise Valley is without a dam keeper, and time is running out. While Fox, Hippo, and Van hurry east to warn the townspeople, Pig ventures on his own path. Pig is following a trail of clues that are inexplicably linked to his father, and now that trail is leading upward. What he finds on a floating island above the clouds will shake him to his core, but it just might be the answer he needs to save his home. Robert Kondo was born and raised in the suburbs of Los Angeles. As a child, he learned art from his mother, a trained fashion designer, which led him to study illustration at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.

It tells the story of Pig, an introverted youth who lives in a windmill and keeps a dark fog from engulfing his town. Although socially rejected by his peers, he is befriended by the artistic Fox. Kondo and Tsutsumi began developing the film while working as art directors on Monsters University and produced it through a co-op program at Pixar.

As a result, they had to find a way to not only maximize their own off-hours availability but also to harness an equally busy team of plus artists, animators and production people, all at variable hours. The filmmaking process relies heavily on reviews, a process in which artists, animators, editors and other crew members submit work to the directors for immediate feedback. In a studio setting, directors give in-person notes multiple times a day, allowing the artists to return to work and keep the production moving. In "The Dam Keeper," each frame is a colossal, layered Photoshop file, and the finished minute film ended up requiring GB of data. In other words, Kondo and Tsutsumi had massive storage needs.
