Even with skip the line tour booked there was still delays getting into museum. It was over crowded, too many tours with audio equipment too close together to actually hear what was being said. One corridor was done for a Pope so he could see his world, with Rome at the center by having huge maps painted on both sides in sections, with statues between them.
Definitely book a tour. I did it online before getting there. You can skip the lines which sometimes can be long , you see only the most important pieces with all the history.
The Vatican Museums are really big and impossible to see everything in one day. The large hallways were so packed that if you stopped, you would be shoved forward by the crowd behind you. Because of that it was definitely not worth the price of admission. I enjoyed seeing the Sistine Chapel, but there was so much more of the museum that was impossible to see because of the crowds.
All the museum staff cared about was cramming as many people in as possible because it meant more money. You will save yourself a few hours of waiting in line outside. Very convenient for transit to the Colosseum and Roman Forum. Great restaurant recommendations. Very safe neighborhood, even for walking after dark. Location was really good. Easy to walk to all the sites. Many restaurants in the area. Francesco booked our tours for us and arranged prompt reliable transfers for us which was important to us.
