Manga welcome to nhk

This manga follows the drug riddled journey of Sato Tatsuhiro, a deluded hikikomori an extreme recluse who believes the NHK a Japanese broadcasting network uses its platform to brainwash him into living his toxic lifestyle. After meeting Sato one day outside his apartment, the young high school student Misaki, attempts to rid him of his disturbing lifestyle, and keep him from rotting away in his room,. Welcome to the NHK is a melting pot for the isolated. As we delve into the psychological stability of our characters, it becomes apparent that their isolation from society leads to the most skewed, yet insightful conclusions about the external world. What makes this manga standout is its exceptional story, which has no doubt inspired other angst-filled manga such as Goodnight PunPun and the Flowers of Evil.

Thread starter MelanisZbri Start date Feb 25, God this is going to sound like a book report. It's interesting to see the same story told over three different media. The book has some definite strengths - first we see a lot more of Sato's inner thinking.

In both the manga and the anime he seems this over the top charicature, but even when he is doing more outlandish things in the novel, it works far better because we see the reasoning behind it. I think the other two retellings of the story really missed this element and went for the comedy value.

We also get slightly more fleshed out characters for Yamazaki and Misako. Unlike the anime or the manga we get a lot more information about Misako and pretty much all the other characters faster, more up front. Yamazaki in the anime seems written by two different people, in the manga he's a bit more of a slightly creepy best friend with a chip on his shoulder, in the novel he's a much more distrubing character.

His misogyny in the anime is later explained by his circumstances - it's just a convenient focus for all his anxieties. In the book it seems he just carries a deep hate for women, which is then coincidentally where he shoves his daily pains and fears.

I feel Yamazaki in the novel is a weak character - he is too much like Satou except far much 'worse', a genuine hikikimori with severe issues concerning women and especially girl children. The other Yamazaki is just a frustrated student who goes to class and seems to do okay despite not really interacting with his peers , has a steady part-time job, even dating or at least seeing a fellow student who honestly liked him at some level before everything comes crashing down.

The novel also dwells a lot more on the pedophillic fetishism in erogames and otaku-dom where as the other formats branch out and show the other parts, including the bits that honestly aren't that bad , and there are a lot of legal, although not necessarily in those quantities drug-taking - which would explain the talking appliances a lot more.

These let the reader get a real feel for all the various ways Satou honestly tries to better himself, and allows him, while wallowing in self pity, to actually help people who honestly are as screwed up as he is if not worse. There was one situation in the novel I felt worked way better than its equivalents in the other two formats - Satou and Yamazaki getting more information on Misaki's real identity.

It's also very short and feels very very rushed. In the manga stories about Satou's sempai are scattered all over the place and while a bit disjointed, we get the feeling of their ongoing relationship, in the book it's all jammed into one conversation, one flashback and all that in a short chapter and seems very It's like a Douglas Coupland novel on fast forward. I wonder if the Japanese edition of the book is much better. I think I'll put some more effort into tracking it down. Is this a legit publication or a fan translation?

To be honest, the series already enjoys a perfect ending that both reinforces and strengthens its messages about depression, social reclusion, and how to break the vicious cycle. Attempting to extend the story beyond that in a sequel, bringing the characters back to square one as a result, risked undermining its overall impact. Luckily, the new sequel to Welcome to the NHK!
