We got a sense of what a quieter world would sound like. Then the open roads were discovered by racers and now we hear loud engines whining and backfiring, seizing our attention — deliberately invading our space.

Vehicle speed is the primary determinant of sound volume with faster speeds increasing noise levels. The noise generated at all hours by frivolous horn-honking and modified vehicles is intentional and unnecessary. Its sole purpose is to satisfy the vanity of egotistical drivers who are unconcerned about the negative impacts on everyone within earshot. In the Toronto Public Health TPH noise study, they discovered that 93 per cent of residents are trying to sleep in environments above 45 decibels, and 43 per cent above 55 decibels.

This number will increase by urban density requiring taller buildings — more people will live beyond any protection from sound. I have measured nighttime decibel peak events from several locations. During one week, there can be over invasive nightly vehicular noise events, detracting from sleep at a time when we need to rest and recover.

Moreover, WHO found strong evidence that constant exposure exceeding 53 decibels causes an increase in heart attacks, every extra 10 decibels increasing risk by 8 per cent. My measurements show that arterial roads have too many noise spikes to count. This issue is far too large to ignore. Yet politicians have ignored the two things that create the most harmful noise: motor vehicles and motorcycles.

The solutions are known and proven. Noise cameras and speed cameras could be installed on highways and arterial roads sending expensive tickets to owners. Also, noise reduction through street redesign dovetails with Vision Zero policies.

The resulting synergies achieve an efficient and cost-effective solution to multiple crises. Noise directives will be reviewed at Toronto City Hall this week. Will there be political will to curb the small percentage of drivers who believe that their egos supersede the rights of everyone else to live in a safe, healthy and pleasant environment?

We hope that councillors will not tune out the latest research on the harmful impacts of excessive noise levels. Copyright owned or licensed by Toronto Star Newspapers Limited. All rights reserved. It was early , and COVID infections were starting to lap at the shores of the United Kingdom, where Carley is an emergency-medicine doctor at hospitals in Manchester. Carley is also a specialist in evidence-based medicine — the transformative idea that physicians should decide how to treat people by referring to rigorous evidence, such as clinical trials. As cases of COVID climbed in February, Carley thought that clinicians were suddenly abandoning evidence and reaching for drugs just because they sounded biologically plausible.

Children under the age of three should not watch TV or sit playing games on a tablet , while those aged three and four should not have more than an hour of screen time a day, according to disputed guidelines on physical activity and sleep by the World Health Organization. Reading to them, playing games and physical activity are considered far more important than screen time. Set bedtimes are also encouraged. But UK experts claimed the guidelines were based on poor evidence and failed to recognise that not all screen time was bad for children. The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health said the advice could dismay families raising children in cramped housing without outdoor space to play, adding that every child had unique sleep requirements. Others accused the WHO group behind the guidelines of making sweeping recommendations based on little evidence.
