A behind-the-scenes innovator and bona fide Renaissance man, Raymond Scott remains best known for such tunes as "Powerhouse" and "The Penguin. Complex and enormously daunting from a musician's standpoint, the mutated Swing numbers were nonetheless popular in their pre- Looney Tunes day, even if Scott never really fit into the jazz world.
Critics chastised his music for being rhythmically stiff and too clever for its own good, citing wordy titles like "Dinner Music for a Pack of Hungry Cannibals" as evidence. Only recently has he been granted a serious revaluation, having been championed by musicians such as clarinetist Don Byron. Coinciding with this rediscovery is a cult-level interest in Scott's later electronic music: his Soothing Sounds for Baby series was heralded upon its recent reissue as presaging everyone from Ambient pioneer Brian Eno to Krautrock legends Kraftwerk.

Raymond Scott's music is familiar - albeit predominantly anonymously - to millions through its use in the classic Warner Bros cartoons of the s. The music wasn't written for that purpose, but its manic and offbeat character lent itself perfectly to the antics of Daffy Duck, Bugs Bunny, Wyle E. The original Raymond Scott Quintette only recorded between and but, in , Warner Bros bought Scott's publishing, and soon after this his music began to crop up in Merrie Melodies and Looney Tunes cartoons. Few people are aware that the origin of these melodies was in the music of a quirky s six-piece outfit whose brand of screwy 'descriptive jazz' was never intended for use in animation, or that the leader of this group went on to be a pioneering inventor and electronic musician. Glasgow based drummer, Stu Brown, formed his sextet in to celebrate the th anniversary of Raymond Scott's birth, and his lovingly prepared project aims to celebrate the music of one of the great, but not widely recognized musical geniuses, of the 20th century.

He did some of the earliest work with multi-track recording. Put together what may have been the first synthesizer and programmable sequencer. He developed an automatic radio scanner. His was the first racially integrated network radio orchestra. He published some compositions and placed a half-dozen of them on the charts. Some of the earliest synthesized audio effects in commercials probably can be traced back to him. The fax machine? At five years old, Harry became fascinated by the shop's Pianola player piano , stretching his small hands over the keys, eventually learning to keep pace with its mechanical, rhythmic perfection. Harry also liked to play with the audio equipment in the shop, and by age 12, in the bedroom he shared with his brother, Mark, Harry had assembled his first audio lab. He committed mischief with his microphones, swinging mics from the third-floor window to record random conversations of passersby, or his neighbor's embarrassing piano practice. In , concerned about the appearance of nepotism, Harry Warnow changed his name to Raymond Scott. Many of the Quintette titles were painstakingly crafted for the record-buying public, and later featured in Warner Bros.

But despite working as a member of the CBS Radio orchestra and leading his own cheekily named, six-man Quintette—beating Ben Folds Five to the joke by a good 60 years—Scott did his most important work while trying to eliminate the need for musical collaborators. Toiling away in the musical laboratory he dubbed Manhattan Research, Scott developed some of the earliest synthesizers, sequencers, and drum machines, working to push electronic music out of the avant-garde and into the mainstream. In fact, the guy whose eponymous synthesizer would have the greatest impact on the spread of electronic music, Robert Moog, helped design the circuitry for the Clavivox. A collection of found sound woven into an otherworldly hip-hop collage, Donuts and its myriad samples provided crate-digging archivists with an enticing puzzle to solve. Instead, he made that world, and a whole miniature history of pop music, come to him. The former got the ball rolling with his one-man band experimentation.
