In the meantime, I ended up giving in to temptation and just binge watching the entire show. This ended up somewhat obliterating my original mission, i. First things first: this was a rough pair of episodes to return to, particularly episode 9. And the problem is Zechs. Due to aforementioned nostalgia, I went into this rewatch with some affection and leeway for Zechs.
He has a tragic backstory! He and Noin were total hotties in love! Two decades on, though, I found my goodwill towards Zechs evaporating during my binge watching. The first problem might be a personal preference. As a friend pointed out to me, a lot of the most boring exposition about technology gets loaded on to Zechs. Geeking out over weapons can be fun and playful and a good source of characterization. See this scene from Metal Gear Solid 3.
He panics, yes, but even his most panicky exposition moments are flattened out by dialogue like this. Treize is pretty much garbage, but he also has charisma and flair. Relena has poise and compassion. I dislike the former and adore the latter, but I can get why both seem to draw people to their causes. People are drawn to Zechs because… people are drawn to Zechs. The end. I feel this most keenly with Noin. Their relationship seems to be built on almost nothing.
Why did she like him so much in college that she made sure he ended up as number one in their class? Sometimes even negging her. Even from the characters not exactly prone to being effusive. It kills me because Noin is objectively amazing.
This is the kind of three-dimensional female character I enjoy seeing. And this is the kind of three-dimensional female character I hate seeing derailed by a cardboard cutout of a male character. It just gets worse when Une shows up. Then we are treated to truly obnoxious scene where Treize and Zechs are cordial while Noin and Une bristle at each other. So yes, I can only handle Zechs-centric episodes for so long, and I know there are more coming down the pike.
Since this is my blog and I do what I want Thor I foresee Zechs-related content having me spiral further and further down into free associating nonsense. A common translation of one part of the chorus makes things sound wistful but optimistic:. However a good comment on Youtube those exist?! These episodes do pick up some energy when the other characters show up. Duo and Heero are playing basketball in gym class because… why not I guess? I have always greatly enjoyed super secret soldiers in 90s anime trying to navigate school.
Probably the best aspect of this is how they try to have Heero sitting around and brooding, but the aesthetic is defeated by hideous gym clothes. Duo is honestly a walking, talking funny aneurysm.
Heero is hard to track down. He tries his best to make himself unknowable. Relena has set up a goal that will very likely allow her to shelve confronting grief for a long time. I vaguely recalled this moment, but seeing it again 20 years later was shocking. Also shocked that he could feel that much pain. No hashtags or irony required. However, in the end I just find myself returning to one of my biggest surprises from this rewatch. Heero really is more expressive than I remember. Maybe Heero is so good at repressing his humanity that it has to find expression elsewhere.
But I will say that the Heero-Quatre friendship proved to be a highly underrated aspect of this show. This moment- and the moment when Trowa gets Quatre to come back to earth- show so much more genuine humanity than a certain cardboard prince wandering sadly through a half-destroyed castle.
