Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth (PlayStation 4) Review

Nearly three years after it was first released in the west on PS4 and Vita, us PC players finally get the chance to play Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception and Mask of Truth , the second and third games in the Utawarerumono series. So for those unfamiliar with it, Utawarerumono is a series of visual novels with tactical RPG elements. The gameplay consists of the player going from reading various story events and dialogue to tactical, turn-based battles on a grid.

As with most VNs that have gameplay elements, the focus is not on the gameplay, but rather on the story. It may be no Disgaea , but it has a decent amount of depth to it at least, much more so than I often see with such VN hybrids. The game also provides a couple difficulty options to accommodate for both those that just want to experience the story and those that want more challenging gameplay.

On normal difficulty, the battles are pretty much a breeze, but on hard difficulty, not so much. Although Mask of Deception is technically the second game in the series, it is set up in such a way as to make it easy for newcomers to enjoy.

For those that still want to experience the first game in some form, the anime is generally considered a good adaptation. I watched it years ago and, while I may not remember much of it, I liked it enough to want to get into the games. The games provide a good mix of serious storytelling and more character-oriented slice of life scenes as well.

In fact, I like to think of the two games as brothers. Mask of Deception is the younger brother, who is rather innocent and just wants to have fun in this fantasy world with all of its neat characters. Mask of Truth , on the other hand, is the older brother who has lost his innocence and has experienced the hardships of life.

While Mask of Deception does have its serious moments, Mask of Truth is when the real story story kicks in, when everything starts coming together.

The art and music, as with the story, are also pretty good in both games. As someone that has already been listening to these soundtracks for years, it was cool to finally hear this music in-game. And of course, seeing as how these two games have never been released on PC, I should mention the quality of their port. And before I wrap up this review, I should bring up the censorship question. This version of Mask of Truth is the exact same as the Japanese version, but this version of Mask of Deception has one CG that has been changed from the Japanese release.

Overall though, both Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception and Mask of Truth are solid games all things considered. You can buy Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception on Steam here. Game Review: Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth

The idea of a person behind a mask is not a new one, whether it be Batman or the Phantom of the Opera. I watched the original anime Utawarerumono about eight years ago and rather enjoyed the story of forging a new country with a masked man at the lead. Yet, what struck me the most was the focus on relationships. It was the ties to friends and family that set it apart from similar action anime, giving it a bit more of a drama feel than the standard issue battle focused episodes of many other anime series.

Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth is the latest entry in the Utawarerumono series of titles, a tactical strategy RPG with flavors of visual novel.

Buy Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth

Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception came out earlier this year and delivered an outstanding experience for newcomers and veterans of the long-running series. Newcomers could jump into the story easily, while existing fans could experience things at a higher level of graphical fidelity than ever before. Mask of Truth follows up on the tale of Deception and keeps some characters while bringing new ones into the fold. The sound design keeps things a bit mysterious as you wake up and find yourself as a new character and suffering from a touch of amnesia — and of course, in need of a bath instantly. Mask of Truth is more fanservice-oriented than the original and that may or may not be a good thing depending on your viewpoint. Fortunately, much of the adventure still focuses on what the characters must endure. The SRPG mechanics are a bit more refined now, and give you more control over damage dealt thanks to a timing-based system. Battles begin with a bit less battlefield control than usual due to the smaller battlefield, but you can still pick where you want to start the battle and careful position can be a big key to victory. Not only does starting it at a good place help you, but making sure to distance yourself from enemies can come in handy during longer battles. Keeping some distance ensures that you will be able to minimize the damage you endure and prevent yourself from being double-teamed and ganged up on.

Review: Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception [PS4]

I started playing this game immediately after completing Mask of Deception. It's a far superior game compared to the first part. Immediately we get in the thick of the plot without many side scenarios hampering the main storyline. The combat is more thought out and balanced this time around. Character skill points are distributed in a more evenly matter. Those that don't fight also gain levels once you complete a battle.

Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth Reviews

I feel like I need to qualify this review by starting with the fact that this is my first foray into Utawarerumono. The game is a visual novel first and foremost, with its tropes firmly rooted in Japanese culture. Gameplay takes the backseat as story is primarily delivered through text-based interactions with various characters. Mask of Truth is a direct sequel to the last title, Mask of Deception. The game provides some sort of prologue made up of several different scenes that eventually lead up to the climax of Mask of Deception. Essentially, the Emperor, Mikado, is dead, and the protagonist Haku is now having to assume the role of the now-deceased Oshtor, Imperial Guard of the Right.

Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception is available now. And once it's done, you'll be more than ready for the second half – Mask of Truth. Until then.

Everyone loves a good a story with a great premise and what could be better than a story that delves into politics, war, romance, and drama? The series became popular with its in-depth story and likable characters which eventually spun three manga adaptions, a 26 episode anime series which aired in and three OVA episodes which were later produced and released between the year and Luckily fans of the genre could rejoice as Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception was localized and released just this past May and now just 4 months later, fans of the series can finish the story with the release of Mask of Truth on September 5th. The series has no doubt made a name for itself, and there is a very good reason for that.

I have a confession to make. Back when I reviewed Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception , I had not quite beaten the game when I rendered my final judgment. I try to make it a rule to try to finish every title I cover, but due to the length of the game and my schedule, I figured 30 hours was enough to share my thoughts. However, this was admittedly a notable blunder on my part. You see, after I published my review, I decided to go back and finish up the rest of the story and post-game content that was available. What I was able to witness from the narrative perspective was a story that became more personal, more emotional, and altogether more tragic as it went on.

Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth is the sequel to Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception from Atlus, technically the last part of a trilogy, but we probably won't see the first game in North America for a long time. You're thrown back into the middle of the civil war that's been happening between multiple countries as you explore new areas of the world. You're a bit heartbroken over the previous game's events, but you tread forward into new territory, having new battles and exploring more of the story as everyone seems to be doing two different things at once because… war.
