The fact that this cross-over utilized the gameplay engine from SAO: Lost Song got me even more excited about it. The plot of this game takes place some time after the events of Lost Song. After Kirito locks horns with known other than Black Lotus from the Accel World series, Yui is captured and they are all locked out of the majority of Svart Alfheim when the entire game starts to warp and the system goes into emergency maintenance mode. After finding out that Black Lotus and others from Brain Burst have arrived in ALO due to a strange portal that appeared in their world, the trio begin searching for their allies from ALO and Brain Burst alike to re-unlock the islands and stop Vabel from hurting Yui.

Merging the popular Japanese properties Accel World with Sword Art Online is, in hindsight, one of the most natural actions to take. Both focus on gaming as the center of the drama, with plenty of fun and diverse characters from which to choose. Bandai Namco took this idea and ran with it, creating a game that manga, anime and Japanese light novel fans have been wanting. Instead of reacting the way most people would, by thanking the malevolent entity for accidentally doing the world a favor for removing the annoying little fart from the general populace, the duo gives chase, running into Kuroyukihime from Accel World. They fight, because of course they do, with the end result being a realization that Kuroyukihime was tricked by the witch, as witches are wont to do. They decide to team up to rescue Yui and save their respective games from the havoc that the witch will wreak. In practice, however, it feels like the developers skimped on the storytelling. Actions during these scenes, like the clashing of swords or a giant being crashing through the ground, are missing sound effects, leaving thematically tense moments feeling anemic and just off. Their theoretical words, not mine. This lack of care follows over to the translation.

I am personally a fan of both Sword Art Online and Accel World, so I thought it would be something enjoyable for me but turns out I was wrong Videogame adaptations of anime series are usually a hit or miss thing. Some are really great while others are a waste of time. The game seems to take place after the events of Sword Art Online 2, with Asuna rescued and her spending time with Kirito and Yui in the virtual world of Alfheim Online. Crossovers are nothing new. Almost every form of media entertainment has them. Obviously, having prior knowledge is essential to get the most out of the game. As someone who never watch either anime though I have played the SAO mobile game , playing it was like watching a movie that was already in the second act.

With an original story penned by the author, Accel World vs Sword Art Online is a game that plays with the emotions of fans, tricking them with a host of fan service moments and the ever-heart-melting crossover baloney into believing that this hollow, poorly written mess is a game they should care about. You see, this fourth entry into the Sword Art Online gaming canon—which is a different universe than that of the anime—is probably one of the least inspired. Much like its predecessors Lost Song and Hollow Realization, AW v SAO recycles models, textures, environments, gameplay mechanics, animations and voice lines more than your average Omega Force video game. Large sections of gratingly written visual novel sections followed by flying through large albeit ugly environments slashing enemies with barebones combat and eventually delving into a dungeon and fighting a boss. It stretches the character archetypes to the maximum and only makes it more apparent how cliched the behavioural characteristics of each character are when you see mirrored personalities interact with each other. Although, I will never forget the appearance of the cool-as-heck Chrome Disaster, the most badass character in the game.
