The juicy information revealed in this episode is that Mayuri has seemingly existed through, or retains memories, of all the D-mails and time leaps that Okabe has carried out thus far. If that is true, then Mayuri and Okabe are well aware of every event and every death that has happened thus far. Only recently did the idea of non-Okabes retaining memories of former world lines come up in Steins;Gate. We saw Faris and Ruka both recall previous timelines which helped in the process of reversing their D-mails.
But now it seems Mayuri can remember all the former timelines, too, especially all her deaths. And she remembers them much clearer than anyone else besides Okabe. Although not together like they once were.
But up until now, we thought only the audience could see such a transformation happening. The one obsessed with D-mails and time leaps. The one who is relentlessly depressed. The one who is constantly at work, always doing whatever he needs to do rather than having fun with his friends. Up until now, we assumed Mayuri was like the rest in that she did not preserve memories from across world lines.
We knew she was something special, from the short backstory we have of her and her opposition to D-mails and time manipulation, but we had no proof otherwise. Her dislike of time travel is beginning to make more sense now, too, as well as her claims of Okabe changing.
And seeing her best friend change to where he never spends any time with her, talk to her, or even look at her must be the worst part about her retaining her memories. Mayuri has seen Okabe be consumed by time travel as he constantly strives to save her life. Obviously Okabe is undertaking a noble mission, doing his very best to save his childhood friend, but these details are unknown to Mayuri.
She just sees Okabe be distant to her and without any reason. She tries to reach out to Okabe but his responses are always cold. It must be hard to Mayuri to be living through all these timelines without the Okabe she knows and loves. It should be interesting to see what happens to Okabe and Mayuri once they arrive in the best possible timeline. Okabe will need to repair the relationship between the two due to his actions in the previous timelines.
However, I fail to see this being difficult or long as Mayuri is the type to quickly forgive and forget. But the major question would be if Okabe chooses to tell Mayuri about what was happening and why he did what he did. Would be a nice, happy ending if that were to happen. You can leave a response , or trackback from your own site. This is what makes Steins;Gate different from other time traveling scifi — the retaining of memories from other worldlines. I was a big fan when it was revealed that the characters retain their memories since it allowed for some consistency and connectivity between the timelines. That and my friend pointed out Kurisu going back to the scene of her murder after Okabe mentioned it, which is interesting by itself.
Hopefully happy days lie ahead for everyone in the series. At the end of the last episode, she was merely joking around with Okabe about the first D-mail in which she was stabbed she smiling and hardly serious in that conversation.
She probably thought it was all a joke then. It changed when Okabe explained everything further, especially after he stopped Daru from deleting the D-mail. She even went to the former crime scene at the end of the episode meaning she recalls the murder.

Not wanting to move to a World Line where Kurisu dies, Rintaro decides against the hacking. Too afraid to tell Kurisu the reason behind his change of plans, Rintaro accompanies Mayuri to a comic market, trying to think of a way he can save her without sacrificing Kurisu. As a car appears during Mayuri's fated time to die, Rintaro attempts to change destiny by letting the car hit him instead, but Mayuri pushes him out of the way and dies in his place. After he leaps back in time, Kurisu has Rintaro reveal to her that she dies in the Beta world line. Later, Rintaro finds Mayuri visiting her grandmother's grave, overhearing that she's been having dreams of the times she has died, and that she has noticed Okabe's suffering. Meanwhile, Kurisu visits the location where she is destined to die in the Beta World Line. Try Premium.

It follows the story of year-old Okabe Rintarou, a self-proclaimed mad scientist who refers to himself as Hououin Kyouma. Quite by accident, they discover that their Future Gadget 8, the Phone Microwave Name Subject to Change , can send text messages to the past. They start sending more messages, radically changing past events the butterfly effect and eventually leading to distastrous consequences You should watch it. It will blow your mind.

This week Steins;Gate 0 gave me, most, of what I wanted. It gave us a journey through the future, a Time Leap chain and the return of our favorite mad scientist. However, for all that I love it, its to little to late. Lets jump in! So, where to start.

Okabe alone with his thoughts, but making no progress. Outwardly Okabe has returned to his earlier disability. He has taken the responsibility all onto his own shoulders, but in so doing he loses the ability to move. We are finally coming to grips with the most significant obstacle to a happy ending, Makisa's death. If they return to the original world line, Okabe will return to a world in which Kurise is dead. If he saves Mayuri, Kurise dies, and vice versus, thus the paradox in which Okabe finds himself, and the cause of his meltdown. But while Okabe spins his mental wheels unproductively, his interactions with Mayuri and Kurise are opportunities for fine performances from all three seiyuu , and excellent opportunities to observe the depth that has developed in all three characters.

Subsequently, the mad scientist finds himself faced with a horrific decision: choosing which of his lab members will die! Daru begins to make the final preparations, but Okabe quickly tells him it's not necessary to do so. He then quickly runs onto the roof, laying flat on his back. Daru then leaves while Mayuri arrives, asking Kurisu to come with her to the convention again. Mayuri eventually finds Okabe on the roof and gives him some water and her hat to shield him from the sun.

When I review a series, I try to avoid comparing the product at hand to whatever innumerable versions of it could have been, but I almost couldn't help myself with episode 21 of Steins;Gate 0. The plot primarily focuses on Okabe making a series of arduous time leaps to get back from to , and though Maho's improvements to the Time Leap Machine allow for two-week leaps up to a point, eventually Okabe will have to revert back to the old two-day jumps. This means that it will take hundreds, if not thousands of leaps for Okabe to get where he needs to be, and all the while he has to deal with the physical pain of reawakening from his coma over and over, not to mention the work of re-explaining his situation. While Okabe has been in a dire cycle of time-leaps before, this kind of bleak, Sisyphean struggle feels like an honest attempt at engaging with Steins;Gate 0 's untapped dramatic potential. So it's a shame that the story has to rush through it all in a single episode. Obviously, extending this particular vision of Okabe's repetitive and draining quest for more than just an episode or two wouldn't make for good TV; it would be as miserable to watch as it must have been for Okabe to experience.

Wow, that was really a heartbreaker. In a sense, I think this episode was a reward for 20 episodes of tremendous character build-up. The emotional intensity here was a direct result of all that heavy lifting, and as a result I thought this episode was tremendously moving.
