The building that houses the Ghibli Museum would be unusual anywhere, but in greater Tokyo, where architectural exuberance usually takes an angular, modernist form—black glass cubes, busy geometries of neon—it is particularly so. From the outside, the museum resembles an oversized adobe house, with slightly melted edges; its exterior walls are painted in saltwater-taffy shades of pink, green, and yellow. The floors are dark polished wood; stained-glass windows cast candy-colored light on whitewashed walls; a spiral stairway climbs—inside what looks like a giant Victorian birdcage—to a rooftop garden of wild grasses, over which a hammered-metal robot soldier stands guard. In the central hall, beneath a high ceiling, a web of balconies and bridges suggests a dream vision of a nineteenth-century factory. Wrought-iron railings contain balls of colored glass, and leaded-glass lanterns are attached to the walls by wrought-iron vines. In the entryway, a fresco on the ceiling depicts a sky of Fra Angelico blue and a smiling sun wreathed in fruits and vegetables.

The first English-language publication on the life and work of Japanese animation's leading light, Helen McCarthy's tome on Hayao Miyazaki was written and published before the global triumph of Spirited Away and is ripe for rediscovery. Written in a nicely accessible style that is neither too highbrow nor too populist, McCarthy has delivered a book that can be enjoyed by fans and professionals alike. Divided into chapters dealing with each of Miyazaki's major films starting with 's Castle of Cagliostro and ending with Princess Mononoke , his youth and ascent up the animation ladder including an informative and welcome subchapter on the making of a Japanese animation film , and on assorted info such as merchandising and distribution, it packs in just about everything one could wish to know about Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. Though McCarthy's admiration for her subject is clear throughout negative comments about a particular film merit a brief mention at most , this tone of praise fits rather well with the author's intention for the book, which is to provide an introduction to Miyazaki's work, rather than a definitive study. McCarthy aims high, leaving the other writers she so anxiously wishes to see emerge on the subject of Miyazaki to fill in the nuances.

At the ripe age of five, I was mesmerized by the use of color and music, but unable to wrap my head around the plot. Now, at 20, I watched this movie with a new perspective and was finally able to grasp onto the bleakness of what the movie is actually trying to say. Rather than a recreation of Jones book, it is a reconstruction of the central idea with friendly characters and well-disposed environments however placed into a story that holds a lot more weight. Miyazaki contrasts scenes with the beauty of simply existing and continually compares it with destruction and darkness.

After four years without a movie, the 10th animated film of Oscar-winner Hayao Miyazaki, "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea", is about to be released. It is an occasion for Japan to show its admiration for the master of animation. Oscar-winning Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki releases his first full-length film in four years this weekend, dropping computer graphics for his pencil to tell the story of a fish-girl and the sea. Inspired by the 19th-century fairy tale "The Little Mermaid" by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, the story centres around a tiny fish-girl, Ponyo, who rides a jellyfish to escape her home in the sea. She meets a five-year-old human boy, Sosuke, who vows to protect her, but Ponyo is taken back to the sea. Desperate to be a human and live with Sosuke, Ponyo heads to land again with help from her sisters.

This may come as no shocker but what always surprised me was the number of my peers that also knew of his films. Miyazaki and his company Studio Gibli are often compared to Walt Disney. People around the world are moved by his various works that tackle themes and characters of great depth. They were first introduced to his films in when his film Spirited Away took home the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film, opening the gates to all other Studio Gibli films.
