Last week the New York Post ran a cartoon showing a dead monkey with bullet holes in its chest and two cops, one with a smoking gun. The caption says: "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill. It was meant to connect two events -- the fatal police shooting of a violent celebrity chimp that seriously mauled a woman, and the recent passage of the federal stimulus package -- and make a humorous statement about what many see as terribly flawed legislation.

It missed on both accounts. In fact, it raised a ruckus. The Rev. Al Sharpton and others characterized it as racist, claiming it clearly was a reference to President Obama -- the stimulus package's main cheerleader who signed it into law -- and the very old stereotype of blacks as monkeys. The cartoon attracted hundreds of shouting picketers, made the rounds on the Internet and forced a qualified Post apology -- to its antagonists the paper said "no apology is due.

So, was it racist? Certainly the institutional kind. As one member of Saginaw County's Bridge Center for Racial Harmony put it: If it were not a jab at the president, why mention the stimulus bill at all? And, if it were simply a jab at the others involved in the bill, what is the connection to the chimp?

Defenders of the cartoonist, Sean Delonas, note that Obama didn't write the stimulus package; Congress did. They also point to Sharpton's credibility; he has a reputation for fanning racial fires.

Delonas detractors say he, too, has a reputation for offensiveness, something they've come to expect from the Post and its ultra-conservative owner Ruppert Murdoch. No one questions Murdoch's and the paper's right to publish the cartoon.

It's a constitutional right. But what was Delonas doing? Is he so dense he couldn't connect the dots? And where were his editors? People lose their jobs over these things. Commentators Billy Packer and Howard Cosell took major reputation body blows for monkey remarks. And golfer Fuzzy Zoeller didn't help himself with his fried chicken and collard greens talk about Tiger Woods.

Much more than that, though, it's demeaning to a race and a subtle legitimatization of a horrid part of our history. This is going to happen much more often now that a black has broken the presidential barrier. His election means Americans must sharpen their racial awareness brain cells.

And cartoonists and pundits will have to walk a fine line between racism and honest commentary. For the record, many cartoonists' big-eared, simian-like depictions of former President George W.

Bush likewise were inexcusable breaches of the most basic conventions of civility -- even for editorial opinion drawings. Many may say of the Post's cartoon: "Get a life. People should think. And if something is racially insensitive, other people should call them out. If it doesn't change our attitudes about race for the better, maybe it at least will help all of us pick our words -- or draw cartoons -- more carefully.
