Wolfwalkers (2020) – Movie Review
Set in the backdrop of the English Civil War under Oliver Cromwell, one of the most authoritarian and brutal leaders during the English Civil War, who is also featured in the film as well, under the name Lord Protector, arrives Robyn and her her father Bill Goodfellowe. Bill is sent on a mission by the Lord Protector to wipe out the last wolf pack. As Robyn ventures to help out her father to hunt the wolves in the forest she encounters a mysterious girl, along with the wolf pack in which she has the ability to transform into a wolf. Once Robyn befriends the mysterious girl named Mebh, she learns of their secret, that when you are awake you are human, when you sleep you become a wolf, hence a Wolfwalker. I enjoyed every minute of this film, I thought that the animation was beautifully done on 2-D as opposed to 3-D or CGI animation, which is something that I noticed that lately has been missing in some of the mainstream Hollywood films for kids.

Textured in ways that family entertainment is rarely allowed to be and even more visually ambitious that the other Cartoon Saloon films, this is a special movie. Oliver Cromwell sends a hunter named Bill Goodfellowe Sean Bean to a remote outpost that has seen wolf attacks as the city grows into the woods around it. Robyn sneaks away and follows her father into the woods, discovering that the legends spoken of in town of a wolfwalker is true. She meets Mebh Eva Whittaker , a girl who has a wolf form that is independent of her while the human Mebh sleeps. She also has healing powers and control over the vicious wolfpack that has been tormenting people.

There are, of course, some exceptions with stop-motion pictures doing an incredible job capturing a flicker of that aforementioned magic. In the realm of hand-drawn animation though, even Japanese artists working on anime are steering away from conventional drawing techniques as a new wave of glossy CGI clashes with the old. Wolfwalkers feels like a breath of fresh air and a return to the golden age of animation. Magic and superstition remain constant whispers in busy town squares while a ravenous pack of wolves on the fringes of town spark fear and resentment from all who live nearby. At the heart of this man VS nature conflict sits an innocent young girl called Robyn.

As a cell animation film full of mood and details, the film is packed with numerous gorgeous moments to dazzle and impress you in addition to being quite engaging in terms of story and characters, and the overall result is one of the best animation films of this year in my inconsequential opinion. The story is mainly set in the town of Kilkenny, Ireland in The town has been occupied by Lord Protector of England voiced by Simon McBurney and his army for years, and he recently ordered local woodcutters to cut the trees of a big forest outside the town, but the forest is filled with a bunch of wolves, which often threaten those woodcutters who simply try to do their job as ordered by their heartless ruler. For exterminating these wolves once for all, Lord Protector already hired a hunter named Bill Goodfellowe voiced by Sean Bean , but Goodfellowe has not got much result yet despite his skill and experience, and he is often more concerned about his only daughter Robyn voiced by Honor Kneafsey , a little plucky girl who is more interested in hunting than taking care of their current staying place. On one day, Robyn manages to sneak out of the town while her father is busy with his work in the forest as usual, but, of course, she soon finds herself in a situation way over her head, and that is how she comes to have the first encounter with a strange little girl who seems to be living in the forest in addition to being quite friendly with the wolves in the forest. She can freely communicate with those wolves in the forest, and, above all, her spirit is lifted from her body and then is transformed into a wolf whenever she sleeps.
