A silent voice does an excellent job of portraying the different types of isolation the two lead characters experience. It is masterfully shown in these two shots. He is in his empty room in a fetal position. There is also the choice of his body position which seems like he is curling in on himself. He is hiding himself from the world and not letting them see the whole picture. Sound is also present in the scene with the scratching of his foot and neck seeming loud in the silence of his room.

I was able to watch the A Silent Voice recently, and I liked it. The problem here is that I should have loved it. That may be overstating things a bit, but a lot of her style runs counter to the kind of storytelling I prefer. For a film that deals with such heavy subject matter as bullying, disabilities, and suicide, A Silent Voice can be surprisingly restrained in its drama.
With one or two exceptions, the big dramatic moments are quiet and often conveyed more through character acting than dialogue. Even the big moment at the end where Shoko and Shoya reunite after Shoya wakes up from a coma is played more as a quiet conversation than a dramatic peak. Reactions to this sort of drama will obviously vary heavily with personal preferences, but I feel that this style does a disservice to the story.
I prefer my drama to be…well…dramatic. This attitude towards storytelling extends to the plot as well. The only way the film expresses it is through a couple of dialogue-free scenes of Shoko and her family going to the doctor and acting upset after, and Shoko only wearing one hearing aid for the rest of the movie. This went completely over my head when I was watching the film. I noted the scene where Shoko visited the doctor and I noticed her only wearing one hearing aid, but I never made the connection because the film barely even indicated that there was a connection to be made.
When Spike falls from the cathedral, his flashbacks-which are all silent save for the music-tell us nearly everything we need to know about his past. He was a member of the Red Dragon Syndicate, he and Vicious were friends, there was a falling out over a woman, and Spike left by faking his own death.
Some people love this kind of storytelling, but I find it unnecessarily obtuse. The style of storytelling should never get in the way of actually telling the story. Everything about the direction is clearly deliberate, from the shot composition to the choices about when to have dialogue or silence.
Yamada has a clear vision for the film and knows how to execute it. As things are, though, A Silent Voice is a good movie that should have been great. Thinking back I can attribute it to only one thing. That scene on the beginning where ishida is constantly snatching out her hearing aids, one time it cut her when he yanked it out and she was bleeding from her ear.

Yamada and her team released an amazing and beautiful film. Nishimiya, a student with impaired hearing, was continuously being tormented by Ishida in grade school until she transferred. Years later, Ishida searches for Nishimia in hopes to redeem himself. Naoko Yamada is a famous Japanese animator who has directed many animated films and shows. In the show, we follow them through their journey of high school as a group of musicians. Throughout their years in high school, the girls develop their music skills and their bond. I wanted to portray the hope that we can and may still live on.

Six years later after meeting Nishimiya again and befriending her, he starts to gather new friends together, along with old ones he had during elementary school. Despite the changes in his life, Ishida still struggles to make up for what he did in the past. During grade school, Ishida loved to go on self-imposed adventures and played a lot, in what he described as a battle against "boredom". He always played pranks with living things or other kids. After Nishimiya transferred to their class, Ishida became more devious as he always mocked Nishimiya, which resulted in him receiving scoldings from his teachers often. After he became the scapegoat for the bullying of Nishimiya, Ishida was isolated from everyone and became a very introverted individual.
