Date August 31, September 7, James Sturm has spent his life crafting comics, from a miniseries on the lives of Marvel superheroes to history-themed graphic novels. But following the fraught presidential election, Sturm turned his attention to a different kind of storyline.
His answer? The page graphic guide addresses a range of topics, including the earliest days of Medicare, a history of the hospital, and the convoluted way patients are billed for services depending on how doctors and insurers choose to describe procedures. During the semester Sturm and a team of College students who were part of Radcliffe Research Partnerships program dove into the literature.
They were so enthusiastic. As a child Diggs was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease, an inflammatory condition that can affect the arteries of the heart. In the ensuing years, precautionary heart scans every several years have been accompanied by her fears about rising costs. Sturm encouraged the students to develop a visual plan for the comic, no matter how basic, stick figures welcome.
Every iteration helped inform the final product. Having this comic combines the best of both worlds, of literature and of science, enabling us to think about things that are really important.

In my opinion, there are three phases to drawing the figure: gesture, construction, and rendering. None of these phases is independent from the others. Construction is the phase where knowledge of shape and anatomy are employed to methodically build a three-dimensional figure within the page. Rendering draws focus to issues of appearance, primarily lighting. Proper lighting grounds the figure and accentuates depth. Often, these phases overlap. Gesture and construction can happen at the same time, with rough lighting and shadows added before either phase is fully resolved. Some people skip construction entirely and rely on rendering to establish the form. However you choose to approach things, know this: gesture is the most important.

The graphic novel is no longer just a format suitable to learn about. It is also starting to be used as a tool to educate. As a senior in college I thought to myself — she captured the essence of the reading: check plus. Years later, while teaching in high school, a colleague and I formed a comic book club to engage the high school boys in document based reasoning for — you guessed it! Luckily, in the past decade academics have done research studies that validate comics-based lesson plans and curriculum see below , and true believers have developed resources to facilitate teaching with comics, such as A Guide to Using Graphic Novels with Children and Teens from the folks here at Graphix. I never made those photocopies, but, inspired by the simplicity and wit of Badly Drawn Girl , I have embraced the stick figure format and used it over the years to process my teaching experience. My comic book club students and I sat in with BC for this annual global event, which takes place the first weekend of October this weekend!
