‘Hey there, Boo Boo’ — Yogi’s back at outdoor film screening

For those who are unaware of the character, Yogi Bear was a cartoon grizzly bear from the s. Now what does this have to do with Yellowstone? The grizzly bear is one of the most sought-after animals in Yellowstone National Park by tourists. Visitors on many of my tours through the Draper Natural History Museum talk about how they hope to see a bear before they leave, specifically a grizzly.

I am from California, an area once famed for their grizzly bears, but that now has barely any. So, I too hope to see one before my time is up. Grizzly bears live in mountain meadow environments, but live throughout the Yellowstone area.

They range in color from a light, golden brown to very dark, almost black. They differ from black bears, another bear species in Yellowstone, in a number of ways:. Grizzly bears eat a lot and will eat almost anything. They are omnivores, eating trout , elk, honey, nuts, whitebark pine , and berries. However, what they eat the most are moths. Grizzly bears eat up to 40, moths a day [1], in the fall when they prepare to hibernate.

They started eating human food that was either handed to them or stolen by them. As they began scrounging through garbage cans, Yellowstone Park put out a set of bleachers near a dumpsite so people could photograph and watch the animals forage [2]. From — , there were 48 human injuries per year [3]. By the s, park rangers realized that they needed new bear management programs. Grizzly bears are very smart animals, and if they discover an area that produces an abundance of easily-attainable food, then they will continue to haunt that area.

So, the first thing that rangers sought to do was to eliminate what was attracting bears. They removed the bleachers and replaced all trash cans with ones that were hard for animals to open. The rangers say that most bear and human conflicts could easily be solved if people would remove what attracts bears. Bears have an extremely keen sense of smell, and are able to trace a scent from more than 15 miles away [4]. The most important thing to do is to make sure that you do not leave out any food and throw your garbage away in the bear-proof trash cans [5].

You want to make sure that a bear is unable to find it and give it a taste. The female mother bear and her cub in our exhibit in the Draper Natural History Museum have to do with this very subject. Our female, Bear , was hit by a car and killed, leaving her one-year-old cub, G86, alone. He began getting into conflicts with humans over food.

Because he become used to people, they knew that if he kept following that behavior, he would eventually hurt someone. The only option left was to put him down, reuniting him with his mother. Q and A with Mark Divine

Yogi Bear, the iconic Hanna-Barbera character has always been associated with Yellowstone. Hilarious and lovable, Yogi Bear made the perfect choice for a visitor education mascot for Yellowstone. In his letter to Yogi, Garrison complemented the bear on his success, and invited him to think of Yellowstone as a second home considering its similarities to Jellystone. Superintendent Garrison also wrote to Yogi about some of the troubling behavior of the bears in the park at that time. He extended to both Yogi and Boo-Boo a permanent pass to the park as well as a certificate thanking them for their efforts to educate the public about bears. Over the next two years, Superintendent Garrison would receive a response from Yogi Bear as well as trade numerous letters with William Hanna and other members of Hanna-Barbera Productions. Hanna-Barbera agreed to produce bear education pamphlets and signs for park non-commercial use.

Wise-cracking, gluttonous, and "smarter than the average bear", Yogi would come up with all sorts of schemes to steal the "pic-a-nic baskets" of those visiting the park, and hilarity would ensue every time. Boo-Boo would often warn Yogi that "the ranger isn't going to like this".

But while the clip begins with the salutation that has marked almost every Yogi-Boo Boo encounter since time immemorial, both on the small screen and in this new big-screen version, this meeting of the bears ends just a tad differently The animation is so clean and clear that online speculation is that the alternate ending was likely created by the film's animators themselves. Whether the hilariously morose clip made its way online purposefully or as an accident remains unclear, but two things are certain: 1 Warner Bros. Hit the jump to see the video.
