Going back in time or being transported to a different world to start life over again seems to be a popular theme this year in the world of anime, and understandably so. When mild-mannered part-time employee Takemichi is purposely pushed in front of a train, he finds himself transported 12 years into the past during his middle school days as a year-old wannabe delinquent.
In order to change the future, Takemichi decides to join the infamous Tokyo Maji gang and develops close friendships with its top-ranking members, like their powerful young leader Mikey and his surprisingly mature second in command, Draken. But somehow, no matter how hard Takemichi tries, he always finds a new tragic event in the present that traces back to the criminal activities of the Tokyo Manji gang.

Yuri is saved by the intervention of a policeman who has apparently also been transported to this bizarre world; but when the policeman is murdered by his partner, who has been driven insane by the amount of killing he has witnessed, Yuri is only saved from being assaulted when the mad cop is killed in his turn by a mysterious sniper. As Yuri desperately attempts to get her bearings and work out how to survive, she makes some interesting discoveries. Firstly, her older brother Rikka is also somewhere in this high-rise world, and is able to communicate with Yuri by phone; he directs her to start making her way toward the mysterious dark tower that appears to be at the centre of things. Secondly, the masked figures are zombie-like beings who used to be ordinary people but who, through some means of compulsion, are now forced to either kill unmasked people or make them commit suicide. Thirdly, there are other individuals who can control the masked figures and who appear to be at the centre of whatever is going on in the skyscraper world. With all this to contend with, Yuri befriends another traumatised girl, Mayuko; and, with a band of other survivors, they set out to find Rikka and end the madness in which they find themselves….
High-Rise Invasion is the anime adaptation of the manga of the same name written by mangaka Tsuina Miura, illustrated by Takahiro Oba, and published in English by Seven Seas. A shonen series, the anime falls into common tropes of anime written for that demographic, for better or worse. Overall, High-Rise Invasion is standard survival game fanfare. It uses absurd kills, a quirky concept killers in masks doing the bidding of an unseen force that they believe is God , and, of course, a pair of characters that become increasingly capable as the series goes on. The first two of these points come together. The way the Masks carry out their orders to execute the unmasked is all connected to who they were before. Those connections provide a hard set of rules by which they have to operate.
The series centers on Yuri Honj, a high school student who is transported into a strange land. Fans are eagerly awaiting High Rise Invasion Season 2. When is it coming?
