Obviously, the animated classic comes to mind, but Rudyard Kipling's stories have a long history in film. Another book with multiple adaptations under its name is Lew Wallace's "Ben-Hur. It helped establish MGM as one of Hollywood's studio titans. The "Lord of the Rings" films turned Peter Jackson from midnight movie auteur to Oscar-winning superstar, but Tolkien wasn't the only influence on his style.

By Laurel Brown For Dailymail. First released in , the cartoon version of Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book has long been the standard by which fans have known the classic tale. Disney's new version, however, gives a very different look at Mowgli's adventures amongst the animals of India. On Tuesday, the first trailer for this new Jungle Book was released, teasing everything from daring escapes to a Scarlett Johansson-voiced snake.
Scroll down for video. This version of The Jungle Book has been called live-action, but the only actual person seen in the trailer is young Mowgli, played by Neel Sethi. He beat out thousands of other children for the part.
All of the animals that make up Mowgli's world, meanwhile, are created with computer animation impressive enough to make them seem real. Live-action: While all of the animals were created with computer animation, Mowgli - played by Neel Sethi - will be seen in live-action. Thriller: Unlike the somewhat comedic and music-filled cartoon right , the new Jungle Book has a great deal of action.
Beautiful look: With epic scenery, director Jon Favreau's visuals are excellent. The action is on display in the upcoming movie directed by Iron Man's Jon Favreau - Mowgli faced fire, dangerous creatures, fights, and attacks by the tiger, Shere Khan in the two-minute trailer.
As Favreau announced last month at Disney's D23 convention, the movie was first animated and then shot in live action. Then the two versions were melded together resulting in the visually spectacular film.
Other than Mowgli, the star of the trailer is Kaa, the sinister snake voiced by Scarlett. What are you doing so deep in the jungle? Familiar characters: Despite the changes from the cartoon version right , several characters are obvious - Baloo the bear appears a few times in the trailer left. Danger: The trailer features Mowgli surviving several life-and-death situations as he travels through the jungle. Ominous: Thanks to shocking moments and dim lighting, there is an ominous quality to the footage.
Let go of your fear now, and trust in me,' Kaa adds, voicing the character's signature line. There is little music or joking hinted in the trailer, but one lighter moment comes toward the end of the video - Mowgli balances on Baloo's stomach while the bear floats down a river.

Back to basics: With its more serious tone, the new Jungle Book resembles the written version. Voiceover: Scarlett Johansson's Kaa above provides the dialogue throughout the trailer. Danger: Both in the cartoon and in the new movie, Kaa is a dangerous character. No trust: Mowgli is told 'Trust in me' by Kaa, but his constant danger makes that unlikely.

I saw the newest Disney version of "The Jungle Book" in the company of my enthralled year-old son, and there were moments when I envied him—but not too many, because the film is so surefooted in its effects, so precise and simple in its characterizations, and so clear about what it's trying to say about the relationship between humanity and nature, that it made me feel about his age again, too. Maybe younger. From the opening sequence of young Mowgli Neel Sethi racing through the jungle in the company of his adoptive wolf family and his feline guardian, the black panther Bagheera Ben Kingsley , through its comic setpieces with the layabout Baloo the Bear Bill Murray and its sinister interludes with the python Kaa Scarlett Johansson , the despot orangutan King Louie Christopher Walken , and the scarred Bengal tiger Shere Khan Idris Elba , the movie bears you along on a current of enchantment, climaxing in a thunderous extended action sequence that dazzles while tying off every lingering plot point, and gathering up all the bits of folklore, iconography, and Jungian dream symbols that have been strewn throughout the story like Hansel and Gretel's breadcrumbs. It's not accurate to call this "Jungle Book" a "live-action" version, since so much of it has been generated on a computer.

He is a giant snake. In the books and many of the screen adaptations, Kaa is an ally of main protagonist Mowgli , acting as a friend and trusted mentor or father figure alongside Bagheera and Baloo. However, Disney 's screen adaptations portray him as a secondary antagonist who attempts to eat Mowgli. First introduced in the story "Kaa's Hunting" in The Jungle Book , Kaa is a huge and powerful snake, more than years old and still in his prime. In " Kaa's Hunting ", Bagheera and Baloo enlist Kaa's help to rescue Mowgli when the man-cub is kidnapped by Bandar-log monkeys and taken to an abandoned human city called the Cold Lairs. Kaa breaks down the wall of the building in which Mowgli is imprisoned and uses his serpentine hypnosis to draw the monkeys toward his waiting jaws. Bagheera and Baloo are also hypnotized, but Mowgli is immune because he is human and breaks the spell on his friends. After Kaa and Mowgli spend some time relaxing, bathing and wrestling, Kaa persuades Mowgli to visit a treasure chamber guarded by an old cobra beneath the same Cold Lairs. The cobra tries to kill Mowgli but its venom has dried up.

I was 11 and my dad, Wolfgang Reitherman , was the director so it didn't take much for him to see me on the sofa at home and have his lightbulb casting moment. But in the s, it took four years to make an animated film — so if you cast a kid and didn't get to the cutting room quick enough, you'd end up with an adolescent. And sure enough, the first Mowgli had had to be replaced after his voice broke. I loved missing school and being treated like a grownup.
