Dinosaurs died in fire and brimstone after a massive asteroid hit Earth and the collision affected the planet for years afterwards, new research has found. The impact produced billions of tonnes of soot that plunged the world into darkness for two years and led to DNA-damaging levels of radiation.
Scientists have recreated the extinction using powerful computer simulations to discover what happened to the world after almost all life was wiped out. The study of what is known as the K-Pg extinction, which happened 66 million years ago, also raises the question of what could happen to Earth if nuclear war breaks out.
We wanted to look at the long-term consequences of the amount of soot we think was created and what those consequences might have meant for the animals that were left. Earthquakes, tsunamis and volcano eruptions were triggered across the globe when the kilometre 6. It also led to flaming rock particles raining down on Earth, setting anything alight that it could and killing most animal life immediately. The tiny amount of plants and small animals that survived the initial disaster then had to deal with the soot — which blocked out the sun every day for about 18 months.
It caused average temperatures to drop by 28C on land and 20C in the oceans, while depriving surviving plants of photosynthesis. And for another year after the end of constant darkness, high levels of damaging ultraviolet radiation covered the surface due to damage caused to the ozone layer.
