Remember when The Muppets film came out a while ago? How it was full of celebrity cameos and created a real sense of both wonder and nostalgia? This is like the opposite of that. It has some celebrities who clearly love the franchise, and are clearly having a lot of fun.
But the script and the film are just not good enough. Tom And Jerry have never had much luck when it comes to escaping their original shorts. The movie was heavily derided for having a weak plot, and having the main characters talk which is a mistake this film does not make , and the less said about their version of Willy Wonka why? On the plus side, the animation is pretty good.
Another good part of the animation: ALL animals are animated, even ones in the background. Now onto the negative, the script. The fact that Tom is hired to get rid of Jerry should be enough motivation to carry the rest of their antics. This feels like it was made for the sake of being made. Which considering how beloved these characters are, is a real shame. Yes, Rob Delaney is as great as he usually is, but the real star of the show for me is Patsy Ferran as an awkward bellhop.

Any spell cast by the performance is suddenly broken by the arrival of the genuine article. During the s, the pseudo-independent film studios of the time bought up high concept festival films like never before, and as a result the sci-fi-leaning dramas that kept audiences engaged almost exclusively through mysterious and often flabbergasting plot developments that were intended to very slowly unravel the mystery behind the story afoot were thrust into the public eye. Thematically, Bliss falls into a lot of the same traps as films of the 90s hangover released earlier this century, centring its narrative around a man Greg Wittle — played by Owen Wilson unhappy with his middle class lifestyle and his daily management of a doomed marriage and corporate oppression within the workplace. As Greg tumbles down the rabbit hole, we see his struggle for what it really is through the eyes of his daughter Emily Nesta Cooper , though with her existence questionable and Mike Cahill unwilling to have his protagonist suitably challenge anything that is told to him, Bliss at all levels quickly unravels from being an interesting premise into something that demands you engage with it just as little as the protagonist does. Perhaps a lot was lost between the finished screenplay and the final edit, the attachment of leading talents Owen Wilson — who is particularly impressive in his early scenes as the anxiety-riddled lead — and Salma Hayek seeming to suggest that the intention of the piece was better realised on the page, but if that is the case it is incredibly difficult to see how this could have all gone so wrong. With no clear answers to present ideologically or even narratively, Bliss is easily forgettable in spite of its star power and early promise. Throughout the past decade or so, live action adaptations of classic cartoons and animated media have become a staple of blockbuster cinema. As a fan of animation, I cannot say these adaptations were something I felt effectively captured the charm of the works they were based on. It appears that Warner Bros. The writing for the film was glaringly inconsistent, maintaining only a surface level focus on character motivations and dialogue, and the characters felt as if they were constantly being forced along for the sake of advancing the plot. This was all highlighted by the choppy editing, and the overuse of voiceover resulted in the dialogue standing out as lazily written, often breaking the immersion that was already difficult to maintain. Another effect of this choppy editing was that the acting throughout the film was constantly disrupted, and the acting towards the animated characters specifically suffered even more so.
Comedy works differently for everyone. From the exceedingly ridiculous approaches in its build-up, to the short-term ludicrous disfigurement as its aftermath, each set-piece is simple in concept and yet, it never gets old, as long as the filmmakers do it right. For Tim Story, he loses sight of what is funny as he assembles his own modern version of Tom and Jerry. Tom and Jerry —a franchise that thrives without any recognizable names except for the iconic pair — has plenty of well-known celebrities in their latest film. But the question remains: is casting them all the better? The animation is more like an add-on rather than a tangible element that is part of its world. Perhaps, director Tim Story should have played paddy cake with Robert Zemeckis in order to learn how the latter pulled Who Framed Roger Rabbit out of his magic hat.
I've always lived strictly by the belief that you can never have too much of a good thing. The Vermont-based brand styles itself with cheeky names, hippy-dippy packaging, and a willingness to shove just about anything that is even semi-delicious into a pint cup and hope that people dig it.
