Steven Universe Season 5 Episode 8 Review: Back to Kindergarten

It allows the show to tell stories few other shows, let alone cartoons aimed primarily at children, have told. This is what makes fusion important. What makes it great is that it functions independently of whatever allegory it might be used for any given week.

Giant Woman excels by focusing on the sheer wonder of it all and keeping the metaphor angle present, but simple. Because relationships are the driving force behind fusion both in function and allegory, it makes all the sense in the world that Amethyst and Pearl are first at bat.

Only in Lars and Sadie have we seen a pair that comes close to defining themselves by contrast as strongly as the Gem Odd Couple. But here they are, playing checkers in their downtime. At the end of the day these two are friends, regardless of their many differences. How does he do it? A lesser show or a lesser episode, hi there Cheeseburger Backpack would equate Steven annoying the Gems with Steven annoying the audience.

But two key factors prevent this. Beyond our empathy with his situation and a terrific song, Steven manages to be hilarious instead of grating with the power of self-awareness. From her first moments, Opal shows how fusion is not only awesome, but unearthly: from the belly of the beast, Steven sees a gigantic hand burst through to help.

Followed by not one, but two more, in instant succession. After a whole episode hyping her up, Opal exceeds all expectations. Afterward, Garnet hints at the future, because of course she does, and we end the episode totally psyched to see more Gem combinations.

And a shift has occurred. The early run is over, folks! Second, on top of the bongos and baby book that Steven points out, this bug has: a Game Boy, a top-loading cartridge of unknown persuasion, an alarm clock on her dresser so she has to get up to turn it off, reading glasses atop a stack of books, a sweater, loose papers, and a monogrammed backpack HB, for Heaven Beetle.

These Gems are dubbed "Off-Colors" for their differences, unusual formation, or aberrant behavior, which are seen as defective by Gem Homeworld standards; if caught, they would be shattered.
