Amid news reports of "Ghoul" attacks nearby, Ken Kaneki points out Rize, a girl he is interested in, to his friend Hide at a local coffee shop. When Kaneki discovers the two share a favorite author, he asks her out. However, their date ends in tragedy! Kaneki desperately fights the urge to eat human flesh, the only thing that can satisfy his hunger as a ghoul.

He meets up with Hide again, joining him on an errand, and is glad for the companionship. But will his declining condition place Hide at risk? Yoshimura teaches Kaneki more about how to blend in with mankind, and takes in a mother and daughter needing protection. Two ghoul investigators, Mado and Amon, are assigned to the 20th Ward. In response, Touka takes Kaneki out to have a mask made for him. Kaneki starts receiving self-defense lessons from Yomo. He meets Itori, who runs her own bar, and is friends with Uta and Yomo.

Kaneki is befriended by Tsukiyama, a ghoul who knew Rize, who also enjoys reading, and possesses other, more epicurean tastes. When Touka falls ill, Kaneki pays her a visit that has unexpected consequences. Meanwhile, as Nishiki is still recovering from his run-in with Kaneki, he is nearly preyed upon by other ghouls.

Tsukiyama remains consumed with the idea of having Kaneki. The fight against Tsukiyama is resolved, but Touka wants to kill Kimi, now that it's clear she knows that Nishiki and Kaneki are ghouls. Meanwhile, Hinami is eager to see her father again after being apart for so long, and acts out when she is unable. After Kaneki and Hinami witness Ryoko's fate, the personnel at Anteiku are grieved, and Touka decides to take matters with the investigators into her own hands. Kaneki is fed up with not being able to do anything, and makes up his mind to become involved.

Touka sets out to lure the ghoul investigators, but before she can strike, she finds that Hinami has run away. When Touka and Kaneki go out looking for her, they find themselves face to face with Amon and Mado, who has a few surpises of his own for them.

After several weeks go by, everyone tries to return to their normal lives. Hinami moves in with Touka, and despite her aversion to birds, they nurse an injured cockatiel they name Hetare back to health.

Kaneki visits Itori to try to learn more about Rize. The 11th Ward offices of CCG are attacked by ghouls, wiping everyone out. Banjo and company stop in at Anteiku, looking for Rize to warn her to flee from Aogiri Tree, a new group of ghouls bent on taking over-- until Kaneki accidentally knocks him out! High Spirits. Kaneki is held captive by Yamori, who practices his torturous craft on him. In all the commotion, the Anteiku team tries to rescue Kaneki.

As Yamori continues to brutally torture Kaneki, Rize once again appears to him, and the two of them explore Kaneki's childhood and relationship with his mother. Kaneki is forced to make a choice that has a profound impact on him.

Fangzine Reviewed in the United States on December 13, Instead of 12 episodes, this should have had 24 and I was irritated that I had to also order season 2 separately. I like this series a lot, but the first few episodes after the first are a little slow going. There is a lot of cringe worthy parts in this anime - the "torture" episode for example. If you like Hellsing Ultimate, Berserk, or Claymore, give this one a shot.

My one complaint is directed towards Amazon - they shipped this along with an lp record that I had also purchased - and with no bubble wrap or packaging to protect my Tokyo Ghoul set - the damn thing was obviously bouncing around during the entire transport - as a result the case was all broken up and the tabs for holding in the disks were almost all completely broke off - luckily these little plastic pieces didn't scratch up the bottom of my disks, otherwise I would have been real mad and had jump through hoops to get a replacement or refund.

Helpful Report abuse. Mandy Reviewed in the United States on April 3, The original Japanese version is in japanese with English subtitles. Just pretty crappy that I wasted money, should be advertised better. Janet Reviewed in the United States on March 22, First star taken off because of the shriveled case similar to another reviewer However, the cover art is actually fine - only the thin plastic holding the paper is wrinkly from the way the case was shrink wrapped.

So if you have a spare blu-ray case, you could potentially swap out the cover art and the discs inside. I took off a second star because my slipcover also came bent, and with something disgusting stuck to it You can watch Tokyo Ghoul for free on Funimation's website, and it's on Hulu too for now. The content on these discs is exactly how I remember when I streamed it. You don't get much by buying this except to watch it without internet, and to have a physical copy to collect.

Not many extras: disc 1 only has commentary for episode 4, and the physical box has no pamphlet inside. The discs themselves have no blemishes and all the episodes play without issue. You can watch either subbed or dubbed. You get 2 dvd discs and 2 blu-ray discs in one case. To be clear you are just buying season 1 of Tokyo Ghoul, and there are 2 seasons out so far, with a third to air next month.

As someone who hasn't read the manga, I love this anime. It's a serious story about survival and the right to exist. The main emotion is despair. Some romance but it's not a focus of the plot. Some nudity where you don't really see anything. Nothing sexual except one brief scene.

A lot of gore and fighting. Characters have a wide range of ages but nearly all of them are adults. But since it's free to stream legally, the messed up case and slipcover sort of ruined the point of the purchase for me.

I bought this new from Amazon directly, and not a third party seller on this site. I bought this set for my nephew after the two of us started watching it from my copies back in summer of He has watched it multiple times, says the discs work well, and he enjoys the plot. He was annoyed at where the series ended, so I got him the second season, too, which of course made him all the more annoyed because that one ends on a cliffhanger, too.

The manga and the anime seem to be neck and neck right now, so both of us will have to wait until more material is available.

From both our perspectives, I can say my copy which I only listen to in the original Japanese, rather than the English dubs is awesome, and my nephew likes the voice actors for the English dub fine, so no complaints on that end.

All-in-all, for anyone who is either a fan of the manga, or just wants copies of the series without having to go onto Crunchyroll or some other site, this is a good buy. We enjoy it and will continue to collect whatever DVDs of the series are made available. Stephen Reviewed in the United States on July 16, Amazon streamed version is English Dub only which is not obvious. Skip that and order DVD if you want to watch. Frustrating they don't make that more clear and that it's not the original version to begin with!

Layla Reviewed in the United States on September 2, Im always o e of the more skeptical type when buying discs or such on amazon because you never know and i dont want to send it back,so spending dollars on anime?

And about the anime,im normally not thw type to watch many mystery typo movies or animes because they have to have a realllly good plot to make it good, and let me tell you, tokyo ghoul has the oerfect plot, only the day after getting it and im already looking for the second season,it does have alot if gore though so not for the faint of heart but if youre ok with that then i would definitely reccomend.

White Reviewed in the United States on April 11, Firstly what you need to know is yes this is an English dub.
