Dogtanian and crew were beloved in then-emerging media markets the world over in the Eighties, including our own two-channel telly landscape, while slightly younger adult children will fondly recall the show's '90s afterlife in repeats as part of afternoon programming block The Den, itself mounting a comeback this November. The show's legacy re-emerges periodically in Irish pop-culture: the theme song even made an appearance on a sketch as part of the Republic of Telly show in Kids' telly aficionados will also be delighted to know that the same studio has another cult-classic remake in the works: more on Around the World with Willy Fog as we have it.

Most of the characters are anthropomorphizations of dogs, hence the title of the cartoon. Exceptions to this are the temptress Milady a cat ; Pip , Dogtanian's sidekick mouse; the avian jewel thief Blue Falcon ; Planchet a bear , Dogtanian's main servant; and some random townspeople and guards of the Cardinal. He quickly befriends three musketeers Porthos, Athos and Aramis and falls in love with Juliette, a maid-in-waiting for Queen Anne of Austria. This minute long film can easily be termed as a tribute to the original Dogtanian series, which aired four decades back. Accidentally, Dogtanian challenges all three of the famous muskehounds; Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, but ends up joining them. How his new comrades help him in his quest is what makes this movie an interesting watch.

The film is the feature debut of Toni Garcia and was adapted for the big screen by veteran animation writer Doug Langdale. Unlike the original series, there is no Japanese involvement in the film. The story is set in pre-revolutionary France and follows Dogtanian, whose father was thrown out of the King's Muskehounds years previously. He sets off to Paris with a dream of following in his father's footsteps and joining the Muskehounds- and clearing his Dad's name along the way. Joining the elite band proves to be much tougher than he expected. Soon enough he finds himself entangled in a plot by the dastardly Cardinal Richelieu and Milady De Winter to start all-out War between France and England.

The cartoon was made in Japan by Nippon Animation. It was produced and shown in Spain in and first shown in the UK in The series comprised 26 episodes. The story is set 10 years after the original series, Dogtanian and Juliet are now married, with their two children, Philippe and Fleur. Dave Mallow who adapted the original series to English took over from Cam Clarke as the voice of Dogtanian, along with a nearly entire cast change.
