And by different varieties, I also mean the animated kind. Truth be told, I used to get hungry just by watching Spongebob make Krabby Patties. But only after watching anime characters writhe around in the nude after eating amazing noodles on Food Wars! Food Wars! Yukihira is an incredibly creative chef, typically elevating common diner dishes to extreme culinary heights and surprising his more traditional classmates. He also has a tendency to challenge his fellow students to food wars — battles to see who can create the most delicious dish.

The show takes meticulous care to explain the technique and flavoring behind each dish the students create, thanks to collaborations with chef Yuki Morisaki. But knowing that Yukihira has created Jello-cubes out of chicken stock, or that Takumi Aldini has stuffed his turmeric linguini with parmesan cheese, is not enough to express what it would feel like to actually taste those dishes.

Instead, Food Wars! In another, a naked man is tightly embraced by a giant eel. The characters tend to describe what the dish is doing while they experience horny versions of the climactic scene in Ratatouille. But words are superfluous. I can imagine that a dish of freshly caught trout crusted with Kaki no tani rice snack would taste good, but an image of a woman being embraced by a merman with a rice snack for a head is better at explaining the euphoria of new flavor and the surprise and delight of the unexpected.

What the show does so well is not just conveying flavor, but conveying the emotion of experiencing flavor. There is a mental as well as physical response when eating something good, or weird, or disgusting. There is joy and confusion and curiosity, not just in your tastebuds, but everywhere. Like many, my cooking and take-out patterns have skewed toward what I find comforting. It reminds me that eating can be a sublimely pleasurable act, one that borders on the erotic.

When something tastes so good, it takes over your whole body. Between fully booked restaurants and subscription models for reservations, the market for must-have reservations is tougher than ever. The Importance of Scrutinizing Sci-Fi and Fantasy Stories

With the brutal training camps and classes separating the wheat from the chaff, only the best of the best remain, cocky diner cook Yukihira Soma being amongst them. With other contenders including friends and rivals alike, not to mention the sinister dark horse Subaru Mimasaka, Soma will have to work harder than ever to earn his spot amongst the cooking elite. The first season of Food Wars provided a really new and interesting take on the tired old shonen genre, by making it all about cookery as opposed to fighting, and as such, I was quite the fan of it. Throwing the audience straight back into the deep end, The Second Plate wastes no time getting straight to the heart of the action, resuming the Autumn Election arc right where it left off, in the quarter finals. The initial episode gives us our very first cooking contest as we see Soma pitted against Alice, and it is in this episode where the seeds of the underlying flaw of Second Plate are sown. This is a competition arc, and as such, there is nothing but back-to-back cooking contests for the majority of the run time. In my review of the previous series, I highlighted these sections as being the best part of the whole experience, but too much of a good thing can be bad, and this sentiment is applicable here. Watching them back-to-back, the formula starts to wear out its welcome fairly quickly, and a few episodes in, I was beginning to get a little bored.

Students at the Hyakkaou Private Academy receive much more than simple education. During the day, everything seems to be just as regular as any other academy.

Here comes the big one, folks. And there's good reason for that, beyond the clamour for any and all things labelled Star Wars : for one, it actually looks in keeping with the cinematic quality touted by the mainline franchise, with the polish sometimes missing in the other straight-to-streaming offshoots.

Kisah Terus Berlanjut, Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma Season 4 tayang Oktober 2019

The anime Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma is arguably best known for two things: its rampant fanservice, and its equally sexual food porn. An upcoming behind-the-scenes documentary about the series from Crunchyroll gives insight into the latter, diving into the series' production and how they approach animating food, from the base ingredients to the finished dish. A clip from the documentary, premiering exclusively on Thrillist, reveals some of the motivations behind nailing the high-end meals of Food Wars. Though Food Wars is most reminiscent of a sports anime in form and style, the focus has always been on extravagant, clever dishes and dramatic, Michelin restaurant-caliber preparation techniques. For the series' producers, the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with the food they're animating is invaluable; in the clip from the documentary, they discuss observing a tuna filleting demonstration at a nearby supermarket, allowing them to gain a better understanding of the fish and the careful process of dismantling one. That knowledge was directly applied to a sequence in the second episode of Season 4, which has two rival students -- Saito Somei and Mimasaka Subaru -- duking it out over tuna.

But there is one thing that many anime do really well: food presentation. True, it may not seem that big a thing to note. However it has been found that food in anime almost always finds a way to look both lovely and highly appetizing. And remember, these are drawings.
