Joseph the dreamer best animated Christian movie

When Jeffrey Katzenberg got fired from Disney, after the unexpected death of Frank Wells and a power struggle between himself and Michael Eisner , he would strike back by collaborating with two powerhouses David Geffen and Steven Spielberg and form DreamWorks, the first new full-fledged movie studio since United Artists.

It would come close a few times, but DreamWorks Animation has also had a famously rocky history and was recently purchased, wholly, by Universal one of three different studios who have distributed DreamWorks Animation features over the years. As of now, the future of DreamWorks Animations seems both assured with a number of sequels to high-profile originals in development, beginning with Trolls World Tour and uncertain they now reside in the same corporate portfolio as Illumination Entertainment, famous for making wildly successful films at a fraction of the cost of DreamWorks Animation features.

Over the past 25 years, DreamWorks Animation has had a huge impact on feature animation, for both good and ill, and have created a house style as easily identifiable and marketable as Disney or Pixar. In celebration of this anniversary, and the release of the truly brilliant Trolls World Tour , we look back at the staggering amount of films released by DreamWorks Animation — all the hits, the misses, and the what-were-they-thinkings.

Settle in. Fart jokes ahead. And for another definitive list, check out our ranking of every Disney animated movie. Good god this is bad. And the guy who supplies his singing voice Australian musician David Campbell sounds nothing like him.

It will not surprise anyone to know that the production was a nightmare and the film was dramatically redone after a disastrous test screening. Avoid this like the biblical plague. Needlessly complicated, shoddily animated, and sort of racist the two Hispanic characters are, of course, the owners of a taco stand , Turbo represents the very worst that DreamWorks Animation has to offer: high-concept, low-IQ, loaded with pop culture references who told Katzenberg about memes?

And for featuring what is essentially just an animated Richard Jenkins as the owner of a rundown hobby store. Movie World parks in Australia and Germany, aired on television, was released on home video, and played in front of 3D re-releases of several DreamWorks movies in England. Quite frankly not putting this on the list would have been weird. The only thing worse than the attraction itself is how endlessly repurposed it has become. What a headache.

Originally envisioned as an underwater noir called Sharkslayer which makes me immediately think of the short-lived John Ritter animated series Fish City , it eventually evolved into the broadest of broad comedies.

So, yeah. Between some startlingly bad racial caricatures Doug E. Doug and Ziggy Marley play dreadlocked, gap-toothed jelly fish enforcers and ugly, overly busy animation and keep in mind this was released a year after Finding Nemo that turns stars like Renee Zellweger and Angelina Jolie into bizarre underwater mutants, Shark Tale was one of the few hits it was even nominated for the Best Animated Feature Oscar that Katzenberg chose not to exploit in any other arena no sequels, television shows or spin-offs ever materialized.

Excuses, excuses. At the time people claimed that Baldwin was just transferring his Donald Trump impression, turning the blubbery tycoon-turned-tyrant into an actual baby, but it was based on a picture book from , so not even that reading holds much water.

Of course, it was a smash and an Oscar nominee for Best Animated Feature. It inspired a Netflix series and a sequel, again with Baldwin, will open in But it did.

Seinfeld brought along several of his sitcom collaborators, including co-writers Andy Robin and Mike Feresten and a number of his costars, including Patrick Warburton and, um, Michael Richards , not that it mattered much. The movie would receive some additional attention in recent years as the subject of widespread memes, leading Seinfeld to publicly play with the idea of developing a sequel.

Thankfully, that seemed to be idle chatter and we were spared the indignity of Bee Movie Too. To quote the internet: blessed. So now DreamWorks was working with an outside studio and, since the movie was a Chinese co-production, had to deal with the requirements of a state-funded movie.

I remember walking through the production offices before the movie came out and cringing at all the stuff they had to acquiesce to. The ending is pretty cute though. Few films have been as heavily hyped and financially disappointing as Home. Jim Parsons , as an annoying alien outcast and Rihann a as his human sidekick, give it their all, but the movie is too noisy, cluttered, and cutesy hello, flying car powered by a Slurpee machine! If DreamWorks had leaned into the strangeness of its source material an illustrated novel by Adam Rex called The True Meaning of Smekday , Home probably would have hit harder.

Instead, the studio chose to emphasize the sweetness over the satire hey, first time for everything and bet hard on the timelessness of dub step. Most of these titles have been exploited for television and streaming series, but not Mr. Why anyone thought that the one-note animated segments should be the basis for an entire animated feature is beyond me, although executives were probably delighted at the possibility of a story centered around time travel.

Quite frankly, turning the intentionally flat stylization of the original series into three dimensions is an awkward fit, as Mr. You have to wonder, if they could go back in time, would they have made the movie at all?

So when Pixar announced that their forthcoming film, a follow-up to Toy Story , was called Bugs and would open in the holiday corridor, Katzenberg clapped back … by ripping them off. And they did. By more than a month.

At the time the critical response to Antz was warm and while the script remains strong it is telling that they were able to get everyone from Gene Hackman to Sylvester Stallone , the fact that Woody Allen voices the main ant makes it hard to watch and the animation is alarmingly ugly. DreamWorks Animation would ultimately hit its stride thanks to its computer-animated films but with Antz , it was off to a rocky start.

Meanwhile, Prince Charming Rupert Everett looks to exact revenge on the kingdom, alongside some fairy tale villains. Seaman , although their cleverness is largely missing from the proceedings. Considering how much of the film takes place on a ship, you can feel the franchise literally treading water. After a failed attempt to return to New York at the end of the first Madagascar , the gang returns for an adventure on the African continent in the awkwardly titled Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa.

Ferrell plays the titular extraterrestrial supervillain, who routinely faces off against an unrelentingly perfect superhero named Metro Man Pitt. When Megamind accidentally kills Metro Man and conquers the city, his life is thrown into existential crisis.

Will he become a hero or descend towards even more dastardly behavior? And does anyone really care? The answer to that last question is no. And as a spoof of superhero stories, it feels both late after things like Mystery Man and too early just two years after Iron Man and The Dark Knight.

Originally Katzenberg had announced that there would be five total Shrek installments, but the fourth entry marketed as Shrek: The Final Chapter , apparently tied things up well enough for them to stop ahead of schedule. It also made a lot of money it was the fifth highest grossing film of the year.

He wishes he never rescued Fiona. In this new alternate reality, Rumpelstiltskin has taken over Far, Far Away and led it into post-apocalyptic disrepair, overrun with witches and, for some reason, techno music. I remember stumbling across the movie on cable before I sat down to properly watch it and was very confused.

Alternate history is a telltale sign that a franchise has run out of creative gas, which is very much the case with this installment, especially by the time Shrek joins a band of ogre freedom fighters if you thought the baby ogres were horrifying … Yes, this was the time to close this particular book.

PDI was an outside vendor, who would then become a partner, before finally going under and being absorbed by DreamWorks Animation proper. For Captain Underpants: The Epic First Movie , they followed a similar formula: they developed and storyboarded the movie in house but then farmed out the animation to Mikros Image and Technicolor Animation Productions, bringing the movie in for a fraction of the normal cost.

Not only did the strategy maximize profits but it also gave the movie a markedly different look than most DreamWorks Animation features. Still, if you want an energetically animated, snappily written by Forgetting Sarah Marshall vet Nicholas Stoller and directed by Turbo filmmaker David Soren movie for the kiddies, you could do worse than Captain Underpants.

The pacing is off too and takes way too long to get going. The animation is incredibly mechanical and unnatural. How is this for a sobering statistic: for six whole years Shrek 2 was the highest-grossing animated film of all time Toy Story 3 dethroned it. Development on the sequel began before the first film had even been released Katzenberg is nothing if not bullish , with a number of failed versions worked on and then tossed aside including a politically charged take where Shrek abdicated the throne before they settled on what was ultimately released to theaters.

A story about superficial beauty and the need to constantly improve yourself resonates strongly. It also introduces Puss in Boots Antonio Banderas , a for-hire cutthroat who ultimately becomes a Shrek ally, probably the greatest character in the entire franchise.

But a little Donkey goes a long way, and those things that made the first film so special already began to wear thin why are there so many pop songs?

Katzenberg clearly still had an axe to grind, as is evidenced by all the Disney digs, and grind it he did. The Road to El Dorado was a bumpy one indeed. Originally envisioned as a more dramatic, PGrated historical drama along the lines of The Prince of Egypt , it was heavily retooled several times during its five-year production, with at least two filmmakers including Monsters, Inc.

In a interview, Katzenberg claimed to have directed Road to El Dorado himself. Beyond the extreme disinterest in historical accuracy or ethnic sensitivity the natives are a Hispanic hodgepodge of cultures and identities and general sloppiness of the story credited to Aladdin screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio , The Road to El Dorado is just excessively dull.

This thing should at least be rewarded points for chutzpah. Ask Jeffrey Katzenberg, who came up with the idea and damnably pushed it through production. And that film will be getting a theatrical follow-up in At the time of Monsters vs.

This explains why, in an early sequence in the movie, a character can be seen bouncing a paddle ball directly into the camera for what seems like 5 whole minutes. Watching the movie flat at times makes it feel like some experimental film. And these gags aside, Monsters vs. Aliens is pretty fun. And while Monsters vs. Image via DreamWorks Animation.
