Madoka review

The magical girl genre typically features elementary to middle school aged girls more rarely high school who get nifty transformation sequences to turn into superheroes that combat evil. Themes typically include love, friendship, and doing the right thing. There is blood, there is death, and the show takes everything that makes a magical girl what she is and makes it sick and sinister. For one, in most magical girl series, the main character Madoka would have become a magical girl in the first episode and it would have been the start of her adventure. Instead, she is given an extraordinary amount of time to consider what she would wish for in exchange for becoming a magical girl. She has the potential to be one of the most powerful magical girls ever, but she sees the toll it exacts on the other magical girls and is rightfully scared to step up to the plate, at least not without a wish that would make all her sacrifice worthwhile.

Madoka had always thought magic was the stuff of fantasy…until she sees the transfer student fighting with that very animal! Will Madoka become a magical girl in exchange for fulfilling her dearest desire? What will be the cost of having her wish come true? Additionally, the story focuses on the origins of one of the beloved characters in Madoka, and her struggles to both accept her role and manage the power gifted to her.

Where this release is able to garner more universal appeal lies in the strength of its narrative, grounding its subjects by facing them with relatable moral conundrums. Consequently, the manga contains a lot of insightful ruminations on the cost and responsibility that comes with power. These sentiments are not just in word though, as the manga takes a mature approach in showing some of the consequences of mismanaging power.

These themes are well explored across the various characters, giving each of the magical girls a different approach to how they handle and mishandle the gift they are given. However, the manga can be inconsistent in dialogue and these insightful moments are few and far between. Ultimately, the narrative acts as a strong draw that will appeal to new and old fans of the franchise, while still showing a degree of simplicity through a limited vocabulary.

This can give a slightly polarizing feeling as narrative fluctuates, but the patient reader will be rewarded in taking in the full scope of the story. Originally published in , the omnibus edition features the debut from artist Hanokage. While her anxiety is related in the bonus chapters in trying to approach a franchise and recreate the familiar style, the artist does a phenomenal job of capturing the nuances of the characters.

As a result, there are many strong, defining panels that will leave a lasting impression on fans, new and old. However, the book acts as a great exploration and introduction to the genre, largely due to a strong narrative approach that takes a mature and honest look at the genre. Additionally, the material is well presented in the omnibus format that captures a complete story, which would serve new or curious fans into the genre as an ideal starting point.

Hello, my name is Adam Symchuk and I am from Canada. In my teenage years I came across the work of Shinya Tsukamoto and Koji Wakamatsu, which sent me down a life long obsession with Japanese Film. Review: Nendoroid Kaname Madoka

What would you do for a wish? However, a fellow magical girl, Homura, tries to stop her from such a decision. And you thought the Hobbit was confusing. Homura will allow nothing and no one to come between her and Madoka… nothing.

Puella Magi Madoka ☆ Magica: Full Series Review

This convoluted third film in a trilogy spun off from a popular Japanese TV series is alternately enchanting and exhausting. By Geoff Berkshire. Associate Editor, Features. Pic was a box office hit on home turf where it was released Oct. The series finale found year-old pink-haired heroine Madoka Aoi Yuki sacrificing herself to erase the cruel fate awaiting magic girls everywhere by making a deal to eliminate the existence of witches. Repeated imagery from the series premiere episode signals someone has mysteriously hit a reset button. While all the key characters and settings are rendered in traditional anime style, Gekidan has seemingly been allowed free reign when it comes to realizing the Nightmares, and expands upon the distinctive witch attacks they created for the original series. But the quirky touch soon feels like a gimmick and wears thin from overuse throughout a nearly two-hour running time. At a certain point the hyperactive editing and hallucinogenic images cross a line into sensory overload, becoming a calculated distraction to keep viewers from thinking too hard about the paradoxes that begin to open up in the narrative.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica review – Magical Girls have never been so fun

madoka review

Madoka is one of those Nendoroids that I knew from the moment it was announced that I would need to get it. It is really adorable and although I had little affection for her character in the Anime, once Madoka was translated into Nendoroid form she became irresistible! I shall not spoil people who have not watched the Anime but seriously, what are you waiting for? Madoka comes in a nice colourful box with a pink to purpe shades in a gradient and also magic looking logos adorning the box.

Story: Madoka loves her family and friends. She leads a quiet and carefree life.

Reviews for PUELLA MAGI MADOKA MAGICA Homura & Madok

If you had the ability to have any wish you want granted, but you had to give up your future freedom and enter a war against evil, would you take it? If so, what would you wish for? Madoka, the main character, has the opportunity to become a magical girl and have one wish granted. Is it worth the risk? Is this anime worth watching? It was brought to my mind again after listening to an anime podcast so I decided to give it a shot.

Film Review: ‘Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie — Rebellion’

We screwed up, Tonstant Weader. This retrospective review was always going to be at best biased and at worst a foregone conclusion. But everything has to start somewhere. She and a friend are offered a chance by a cat-bunny-thing to become magical girls — individuals who must tirelessly fight surreal creatures called witches — in exchange for having their dearest wish granted. When the girls express skepticism, they are paired with a senior magical girl to show them the ropes, all while being shadowed by another girl with unknown intentions. The characters are deep in a slow-burning way.

Searching for products Introduction This is it! The big one! This is one of those game-changers in anime, those shows that come along once every so often and blow apart what has come before, and set new standards that will be chased after for years to come. In the US, Madoka Magica is available in standard edition and limited edition single volume releases.

Simply put, Madoka is a terrific show, defying the cringy stereotypes of the magical girl genre while delivering an highly favorable impact in only 12 episodes. To be honest, it was hard to know what one should expect given that it was a blind watch and the genre has never been my usual choice to watch in animation, but experience took over and all the aspects that exists in any good to great animated show- gripping characters, stellar animation quality, and a very interesting story with progression- were all in place, along with some very thought-provoking thematic elements that created an unexpected depth in the storytelling.
