We're fighting for our lives

Back in , the gorgeously animated movie "The Book of Life" brought this Mexican holiday to life with its tale of a love triangle twisted by meddling gods and a journey through the afterlife. This time, the adventure is not in a theater but at home, in a nine-part series on Netflix called "Maya and the Three. This time, our story takes us through the jungle to the fictional Teca Kingdom in Mesoamerica, where the adventurous and rebellious princess Maya Saldana is more enthusiastic about pit fighting than her coronation day.

She's stronger than she looks, but is perhaps a little overconfident and reckless, which only serves to deepen the conflict between her and her mother, Queen Teca Sandra Equihua , in a relationship that is reminiscent of another animated tale, Pixar's "Brave.

S after its October 22 debut. Here's why everyone is watching it. However, in "Maya and the Three," everything isn't thrilling wrestling matches and fancy outfits — as there's also a prophecy looming over the Teca Kingdom and an underworld full of jeering dark gods who want Maya for their own. Thus, Maya sets out on her adventure, on which she meets interesting new friends and fights an array of unique gods.

It's the setting here that really shines, as it's inspired by the indigenous cultures and mythology of Latin America, gorgeously rendered in rich and whimsical 3D animation. Evidently, by the way "Maya and the Three" has rocketed up the Netflix Top 10, audiences aren't resisting this lovely new animated series. Critics and audiences alike are delighted by Maya and the Three Netflix.

“Coco,” a Story About Borders and Love, Is a Definitive Movie for This Moment

It was , and the Mexico City-born animator had arrayed skulls, flowers and ornate drawings around the San Fernando Valley backyard of his idol, director Guillermo del Toro. His aim was to persuade Del Toro to produce his first film, a movie centered on the Mexican Day of the Dead holiday. Even so, he offered the young animator five minutes of his time. I almost fall in the pool.

The new take on the George A. Romero classic zombie movie Night of the Living Dead is coming soon.

Coco review: this new Pixar movie atones for years of Mexican cartoon stereotypes

In my home, these include the viewing of holiday-themed television programs and theater visits to see blockbuster films. The film draws its cultural inspiration from several Mexican variations of this tradition, which also happen to be those most commonly found in the United States. Coco is the story of Miguel, a young boy eager to follow his passion for music in a family that—puzzlingly—has banned music for several generations. Miguel finds himself transported to the place of the dead just as the dead are making their way to the land of the living to be with their family and friends. Adventures ensue as this living boy tries to navigate the land of the dead, a visually vibrant and whimsically reimagined illustration of this traditional realm. Viewers have found Coco to be a powerfully communicated story about the importance of family, community, a sense of belonging, tradition and remembrance. So here is the big question: did Disney Pixar get it right? If so, which of the many distinct variations and of which communities? What about the Day of the Dead that merged with Roman Catholic practices after the arrival of Europeans in the Americas?

While networks like Freeform dedicate entire weeks worth of programming to celebrating holidays like Christmas and Halloween, we'd like to direct your attention to the amazing movies celebrating the Day of the Dead. During the Day of the Dead which takes place every year on November 1 and 2 , lost loved ones are remembered and celebrated. More than that, some believe that the spirits of the dead return to earth during the holiday to celebrate with their families and love ones. While binge-watching Day of the Dead themed movies is not a traditional part of the festivities, that doesn't mean the ones that exist are totally worthy of marathoning.

However, as an avid fan of all things animated, I was very happy with this movie when it came out in as The Book of Life , produced by Guillermo del Toro and directed by Jorge Gutierrez.

Snow White served as a template that would be adopted by the Disney company for decades to come. Even then, both experiences should probably be fitted with an asterisk. Lady only has puppies in the happy epilogue, and after giving birth to over 13 puppies before adopting 88 others , Perdita had to face the trauma of having her offspring taken from her. Over the past 50 years, across the Disney and Pixar which became a subsidiary of Disney in oeuvre, there may be examples of mothers who are given a bit more to work with, but they are far outnumbered by the moms who die or suffer.

Since Disney Plus launched on November 12, people have been swept up in all the family-friendly chaos, indulging in a long list of classic Disney favorites. On many occasions, Disney has acknowledged the racist nature of its older animated films, like Dumbo, The Jungle Book, and The Aristocats. Por supuesto, Disney received major backlash for trying to trademark the name of a holiday—what is more culturally appropriative than claiming ownership over an entire celebration? Especially one with indigenous roots? But prior to withdrawing their application, Disney received extensive backlash from the Latnix community. Within just a few days, the petition had garnered 21, signatures. But Alcaraz stood his ground, confident that his perspective would lend valuable influence to the movie and ultimately prevent Pixar from doing the Latinx community a disservice.
