Bluto tries to cheat, but Popeye triumphs. While hiking at Yellowstone, Olive falls into a deep hole where she meets a caveman and dinosaur.

Popeye follows her into the hole to save her from the caveman. Popeye and Bluto gas-up their airplanes for a race around the world. Bluto takes an early lead, but Popeye has a secret weapon to see him through to the finish. Popeye and Bluto stop by Olive's house where they both show off their dance moves. They play games until Bluto engages in dirty tricks to try to get the girl. In this reworking of a classic Betty Boop cartoon , Popeye imagines what the world would be like if Olive Oyl was the president.

Popeye competes against Hercules during the first Olympics. Rather than going for the gold, the athletes seem more interested in competing for the love of Olive Oyl. Bob Hope and other celebrities honor Popeye's contributions to film in honor of his year-career. Bluto tries to ruin things, but a trophy surprise helps Popeye land back on top.

While aboard his Navy ship, Popeye thinks about proposing to Olive. He enlists the help of his friend Shorty, but the plan backfires when Olive develops feelings for him instead of Popeye. Our hero eventually gets revenge on Olive and Shorty. Popeye, Olive, and Bluto work at the circus. Bluto continually tries to sabotage Popeye's performances to steal Olive away. Popeye and Olive accidentally launch a rocket into space. Popeye lands on Mars where he foils an alien plot to invade Earth.

Popeye lands a Plymoth Rock where he meets and falls in love with Olive Oyl. A chief of her tribe does not approve of the match and tries to sabatoge Popeye and take Olive for himself. Popeye and Olive go to the carnival where Bluto tries to steal her away with feats of strength. Bluto tries to sabotage Popeye's training before they get in the ring for a boxing match. Popeye is exhausted by the time he gets to the ring and Olive comes in clutch with a big assist.

An admiral pulls into Olive's service station, but Popeye and Bluto attempt to "help" creating more problems than solutions. Bluto hypnotizes Olive and uses magic to turn Popeye into an animal. With the help of some spinach, Popeye regains control of the situation, rescues Olive, and turns the tables on Bluto. Popeye and Olive attend a variety show and Bluto is one of the performers.

Bluto uses hypnosis and magic to try to win over Olive, but Popeye has his own secret weapon; spinach. This spooky story finds Bluto staging pranks which he blames on Popeye to turn Olive against him.

Bluto takes things too far while enjoying a picnic with Popeye and Olive. Popeye ends up getting the last laugh. Popeye, Olive, and his nephews celebrate Christmas Eve. Bluto dresses as Santa to make a move on Olive, but he is soon revealed. Bluto comes up with the idea to destroy Popeye's spinach to finally defeat his adversary. Olive is working as a nurse, so Popeye and Bluto try to hurt themselves in order to see her.

When they finally land in the hospital, it turns out to be the wrong medical facility. Olive gives Popeye a map to a buried treasure, but Bluto catches wind of the situation and tries to beat Popeye to the prize.

Popeye is teaching Olive how to ice skate, but she seems more interested in learning how to ski with Bluto. After Bluto crosses the line, Popeye must come to Olive's rescue. Popeye and Olive are captured by pirates. The pirate captain takes an interest in Olive and Popeye must save her at all costs.

Bluto whisks Olive away in a hot air balloon, but he pushes things too far. Popeye comes to the rescue, but can he get there in time. When Olive joins the police department, Popeye follows her around to keep her safe. Popeye hurts more than he helps and ends up in the slammer until Olive faces a great danger.

Bluto dresses up as Superman to impress Olive Oyl. Not to be outdone, Popeye eats his spinach and turns into a real-life superhero. Popeye encounters Bluto and a bulldog while on a walk with Olive's French poodle, Frenchy. Popeye takes Olive on a driving lesson, but she gets in several accidents culminating with a showdown with a train. Bluto comes up with tasks to distract Popeye as he tries to woo Olive.

Popeye and his spinach get the last laugh. Popeye and Bluto compete in a swimming race. In order to contend with Bluto's cheating, Popeye turns to his favorite performance enhancer; spinach.

Popeye is the villain of this tale as his snoring torments a mouse in his house. The mouse takes matters into its own paws after stumbling upon some spinach.

Popeye helps Olive fix a leak, but a jealous Bluto causing more problems in order to make Popeye look bad. Popeye enlists the help of a goldfish to resolve the situation. Popeye catches his nephews lighting fireworks on the Fourth of July and puts an end to their dangerous fun. His nephews, in turn, pull pranks on their uncle. Popeye and Bluto open competing diners and each try to earn Wimpy's business. This is a spinach-free episode.

At the zoo, Bluto tries to impress Olive who is accompanied by Popeye. Olive wanders into one of the animal enclosures, but Popeye — empowered by spinach — saves her. Popeye plays Robin Hood in this classic cartoon. Bluto is his greedy rival, but Popeye knows that his trusty spinach can help him get out of any jam. Popeye isn't the only one who loves spinach. This cartoon finds him contending with a hungry gopher for his favorite food.

Popeye is one of the most beloved cartoon characters of its time and although his popularity has waned in recent times, he is to me a wonderful character and his series is magnificent and one of the best series of theatrical animated shorts in the thirties. It features a variety of unforgettable characters such as Olive and Bluto and it mostly managed to satisfy with its mix of good action and terrific humor. And although its quality stumbled later on in the early 40s , it was amazing during most of its s run. So without further ado, here is my list of the best Popeye the Sailor short films. This is my personal list and I have to say that I only included the Fleischer entries on this list.
