Haru is a bashful teenager who risks her life to rescue a cat from being run over in traffic. This good deed turns out to be a huge mistake: the feline she saved is the prince of the Cat Kingdom, and its king is determined to kidnap Haru and make her marry his cat son. The only ones willing to help her are the debonair, swashbuckling Baron a well-dressed, talking cat , Muta an oversized talking cat , and Toto a raven, also able to talk. It started as an animated short commissioned for a Japanese theme park ride; when that project fell through, Hayao Miyazaki tasked his animators with expanding it. The job was ultimately won by Hiroyuki Morita, who had been key animator on My Neighbors the Yamadas. As a whole, The Cat Returns is an up-and-down viewing experience.

At first Studio Ghibli was approached in by a Japanese theme park, who requested to have them write a minute short starring cats. Hayao Miyazaki wanted this short to have three key elements: Baron, Muta, and a mysterious antique shop. Haru is a seventeen-year-old girl, a quiet and unassuming high school student who has a unique ability to talk to cats that has been long suppressed. After an ordinary day of school, on the way home with her friend discussing boys and suchlike, they observe a strange, odd-eyed cat waiting to cross the street holding a parcel in its mouth.

Released in by Studio Ghibli, The Cat Returns is a fun animated fantasy film about a young girl named Haru Yoshioka who is forced to marry a cat prince, and must seek the help of a cat named Baron Humbert von Gikkingen. The film was based on the manga of the same name by Aoi Hiiragi. The manga was a spin-off of another manga titled Whisper of the Heart which was also adapted into a film by Studio Ghibli. This project consists of brick-built models of the film's two main characters, Baron and Haru. It would include printed decals on the eyes, as well as on Haru's school uniform and Baron's face and jacket.

A new trailer for the live-action sequel of Whisper of the Heart features Shizuku and Seiji as ambitious, hard-working adults. This new trailer opens with flashback shots of Shizuku and Seiji in their middle school years, but is with scenes of the couple as working adults. Shizuku, a budding novelist in her youth, appears to be facing difficulties with her publisher and her family, while Seiji is shown breaking a string on his violin while playing. It is a coming-of-age story about a girl in junior high named Shizuku Tsukishima, a young bookworm that loves fairy tales. She eventually realizes that all the books she checks out from her library are also being checked out by a boy named Seiji Amasawa, whose name is on each of the checkout cards.

He is coming to life in the main character's mind only when she tries to find a good plot for her story : he becomes one of the main character of her story. In his statue form, he can't move from the Ministry of cats and he's always in the same position. In his cat form, he's an anthro cat he has a human-like body form, with two feet and two arms , his fur is orange and yellow. There's only one scene where he's not dressed like this, the waltz scene where he dances with Haru, at this scene he's dressed like this :. Before meeting Haru, he was with Muta and Toto at the Ministry of cats, living his life outside the cat kingdom.
