Being my third time in Japan, this time I wanted to explore some places which are difficult to get to using public transport, and in one of my day trips I ended up in Gunma prefecture, about 65 miles northwest from Tokyo. In fact, drift professionals such as Keiichi Tsuchiya were consulted during its creation, and that makes it really interesting even for those who are not very keen on anime. On a personal level, this series is one of the reasons why I love cars.

Akina SpeedStars

Akina pass, as referred to by the characters, is actually Jomo-Sanzan Panorama Highway. The broad, low dominantly andesitic stratovolcano rises above the northern end of the Kanto Plain. It contains an elliptical, 3 x 4 km summit caldera with post-caldera lava domes arranged along a NW-SE line. Although some of the names of the locations the characters race in have been fictionalized, all of the locations in the series are based on actual locations in Japan. Mount Haruna is a caldera volcano.

Mount Haruna started to form more than , years ago and the last known eruption was AD. The lake and the area to its east, as well as the southern and southwestern slopes, lie within the borders of Takasaki city. The border of Shibukawa city to the east nearly approaches Lake Haruna. Both Shinto village and Yoshioka town are on the southeast slopes of the mountain. The northern and northwestern slopes lie within Higashi Agatsuma town, which also bounds Lake Haruna. The summit lies on the border of Takasaki and Higashi Agatsuma. It is also where Takumi won his first few races. It is the home course for the racing team called the Akina Speed Stars with which Takumi becomes closely associated.

Project X is an odd duck when compared to the rest of the project cars in the Speedhunters stable. Because it is our daily driver while in Japan, and is used regularly at the track, it always needs to be in a running state, making it less of a project car and more of a usable tool. That said, this car allows us to head into some pretty cool spots around Japan, so hopefully it still makes for a good read!
