It's when I forget about my upbringing that I become stale, mundane, blunted. My parents allowed me free access to the weird, the absurd, and the…. What sweet drug is this, that makes one return to the worlds of the past, even if that world makes absolutely no sense at times and makes one's brain explode?

It can only be nostalgia simmering in my veins as I look fondly to the past. As I look fondly to the past and overlook the inherent incompetence of the protagonists. Nostalgia can only work for so long though before its effects wear out and one realizes that they are watching a terminally silly show that is impossible to quit.

Yes, I am watching Gundam Wing again. No, I can't stop. Time is cyclical. I have discovered that my niece has as strong of an interest in anime at the age of thirteen as I did at the exact same age. In fact, last night she called me up to tell me that she had started writing fanfiction.

The only thing I could possibly say at that moment was, "This sounds real familiar. I remember being fourteen and watching Gundam Wing, loving it because other fourteen year olds were given deadly missions and taken seriously by government officials. Childhood wish-fulfillment, you could call it.

It took me back to a time when watching shows was simply about enjoyment. My tastes have changed, unfortunately, and while enjoyment is always important, what I enjoy about a creative work now is entirely different from what I enjoyed at fourteen. That being said, this is Gundam. And while Gundam will try to have you think that this is not anime, it certainly is anime with rampant kitsch, camp, and cliches. Gundam Wing is no different from the Gundam series of past, spouting its message of war being bad and peace being good, but it was the first Gundam I had ever seen.

And that makes it hold a very dear place in my heart. I love giant mecha shows. I don't know when it happened. I don't know why it happened. But watching shows like Voltron and Robotech entertained me greatly. It seems as though it was the natural progression: I had grown up surrounded by science-fiction films from the 80's. My dad is a huge science-fiction nerd, the kind who would slip The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Bill the Galactic Hero into my reading pile.

He had groomed me early in life to adore 80's's mecha anime without really knowing it. When I first started watching Gundam Wing, he would actually sit with me. Often, mimicking the voice acting. There's a certain character in the first episode who doesn't live too long that I love for that reason alone.

You know who he is. The giant mecha shows I watch these days are often about high-falutin' ideas like existence and music theory RahXephon , the complex nature of power and how it warps people Code Geass , or drills and weird shit Gurren Lagann. But don't let that stop you from thinking that my love for Gundam Wing is not great - I have the most minimal of facts memorized from this show.

Funny, how useless facts like that linger in your memory. And while I have forgotten practically every side character, the general story arcs for the main characters are still with me. This is Gundam Wing. And despite my knowledge of the series, it has already given me two moments of Logic Fail in five episodes. Gundam Wing follows the story of five pilots who are sent to Earth to stop the Earth Sphere Alliance from oppressing the Space Colonies.

They have been trained by five acclaimed - and all kooky to varying degrees - scientists. They are trying to stop the group known as Oz from from completely destroying the relations between the Earth Sphere Alliance and the Space Colonies. Space colonies: good.

Earth Alliance: bad. Oz: murderous, evil bastards. On what can only be referred to as a "space ferry," Relena Darlian travels with her father, the Alliance's Vice Foreign Minister, to Earth at the exact same time that these pilots are sent. She sees one, disguised as what the show tells you is a "shooting star," but it's actually disguised as a spacecraft.

This is the Wing Gundam, an impressive mobile suit made out of gundanium alloy - if anyone can say that with a straight face, I applaud you. Piloted by none other than a fourteen year old boy who was been trained to be an assassin. This would be our main character, Heero Yuy. When Relena sees Heero again, it is at her privileged school, where he informs Relena that he will kill her.

I must make a note here that listening to an English dubbed Heero state, "I'll kill you," was jarring for me. This is due to the fact that when I first watched Gundam Wing, it was on Cartoon Network, as part of the Toonami block of programming, which was censored heavily.

Any reference to killing or dieing was switched with "destroy. Seeing exactly how much blood was in Gundam Wing, it's laughable. You were trying to protect us from seeing a bleeding hand? I guess I should be thankful that they didn't replace the guns with walkie-talkies. However, on second viewing, how do I really feel about this series? I will say that what really appealed to me as a young teenager was that, for once, a team of five in a giant robo show doesn't act as a team of five.

They're all out for their own. And while it would have been nice if the scientists had informed the pilots that there were four others who were on their side, I like the room left for miscommunication here. Especially when the opening song is called, "Just Communication. Please raise your hand if you watched Gundam Wing and hated Relena instantly. It's okay. I did too. Not this time around. I find her far more intriguing than Heero, honestly. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that everyone is trained to be special in this series.

It makes Relena seem special simply by her normality. She's spunky in trying to obtain information and following Heero about, even if it might mean her death. Perhaps her best moment is when she's kidnapped on the colonies and Heero's influence on her is apparent. The fact that death is a reality for Relena makes it all the more meaningful when she shields Heero from Duo's gun. I feel as though they were trying to juxtapose Relena's life and outlook with Heero's.

But that's something that will hopefully become more apparent in later episodes. Relena's life takes a turn for the worse when her father is killed by Oz officers on the space colonies. There, she learns that she's from the family of pacifists known as the Peacecraft family. This is when Dr. J is introduced, the man who trained Heero. And with it comes.

Ah, Heero Yuy. Who doesn't love an, "antisocial, Evil Knievel," kind of guy, as Duo refers to him, who works as an assassin for peace? Did I just say "assassin for peace"? That would be silly. Heero snaps broken bones back in place. He does everything that would be impossible for an actual fourteen year old to do, which is probably part of the appeal. But Heero was different from most protagonists at the time not to mention horribly unbelievable in that he has the strongest Thanatos drive of any Gundam protagonist and he laughs maniacally while blowing up mobile units.

Oh wait. I mean, Heero's an assassin for peace. This is paraphrasing, but this is basically what Dr. J tells Relena on this "assassin for peace" bullshit: "Peace is good. War is bad.

Plenty of animes depict teenagers as warriors. This is nothing new. Gundam Wing , in particular, depicts terrorism in a way America had experienced little of when the show debuted in it originated in Japan, of course, and came to our shores in Young teenage boys, wreaking havoc, taking hostages, and more than willing to kill themselves if captured.

Relana Peacecraft gets kidnapped by her and the thought dead Barton organization and to top it off one of the Gundam pilots is fighting by their side.

The Gundam Universe is one of the more complicated and lengthy endeavors out there in all of anime. Among the sprawling, overlapping Gundam series that are out there, Gundam Wing acts as a beautiful gateway series to this intimidating catalogue of shows. The exploits of Heero Yuy and the rest of the pilots involved in Operation Meteor would introduce many to this beautiful world of mechs. Many Gundam series, as well as anime in general, often have peculiar reasoning behind the naming patterns of characters. Numbers, specifically French numerals, is the primary source of inspiration for names here. Actors and voice actors alike have numerous tricks for drawing out particularly emotional performances when the occasion calls for it. Gundam Wing Episodes 1-5

This was an episode that had so much potential that it did not fully realize. This potential largely exists because we get to see two of the best characters in the show explored Treize and Zechs but falls flat in Treize is handled and how Heero is still extremely static as a character. The story involves a trap set for Zechs where he rescues Wing Zero and fights against the Romafeller trap in space while on the ground Heero meets Treize who gives him Epyon and asks him to return a failure and kill Treize as Treize no longer has a purpose to fight. The Pros: Zechs — Zechs is fantastic once again! The Battles — The battle are all great.
