Closing the Door on Immigration
Editorial cartoons are drawings that offer commentaries on people or current events in a sharp, sarcastic manner. In Korea, there have historically been two types of editorial cartoons: multiple-panel editorial comic strips like Mr. By simply reading a comic strip, readers are better able to pick up on the most important news of the day and on the political leanings of the newspaper than they would by reading a long editorial piece. The character Gobawu first appeared in the Manhwasinbo , a weekly comics newspaper published by sculptor Hyojung Yun and war correspondent Seonghwan Park after the September 28, recapture of Seoul.
The Old Man Gobawu comic strip first debuted in publications made for soldiers, such as the Sabyeongmanhwa and the Yukgunhwabo. During the Third Battle of Seoul also known as the January-Fourth Retreat , Kim also participated in the creation of the Manhwaseungni, which was published for soldiers by the Ministry of National Defense.
Old Man Gobawu holds the unbeatable record of having appeared in newspapers a total of 14, times over more than 50 years. Over the course of its lifetime, Old Man Gobawu was carried by four different newspapers, beginning with Manhwasinbo in and then by the Dongailbo , the Joseonilbo , and the Munhwailbo Gobawu was such a cherished and popular cartoon character in Korea that a movie was made after him, as were commemorative postal stamps and a prize for comic strips.
Gobawu also has his own entry in the World Comic Encyclopedia, has been featured on streetlamps, and was the subject of a PhD dissertation.

This is where Priya Gohad, museum curator, tries to pull her nine-year-old son Yash Gohad, away from the comic section, but the artworks of Indian comics like Chacha Choudhary are hard to resist. This one of its kind museums in the city was inaugurated on March 12, , and has reprints of more than 30 cartoonists of India including names like Shankar Pillai, RK Laxman, Bal Thackeray and Satish Acharya. What attracts most people is the huge collection of vintage cartoons from the pre-independence era of Indian history. Like Yash, several children spend time reading about the beginning of the Indian comics in the comic section. The museum also has a varied collection of books containing the work of well-known cartoonists and other research material that can be referred to for research purposes. It is open to the public during Heritage walks on scheduled days. An exhibition of cartoons by local amateur cartoonists and a cartoon workshop for students will also be held.
This is the cartoon that some readers found misleading and in their view biased. After I wrote recently about bias, several readers complained about a political cartoon that had appeared in The Sunday Oregonian. This is a good opportunity to clarify the differences between bias and opinion writing — or in this case, cartooning. On this day in , Benjamin Franklin published one of the most famous cartoons in history: the Join or Die woodcut. At the time, Franklin was the publisher of the Pennsylvania Gazette. He also had been chosen as a delegate for an upcoming conference in Albany, New York, to deal with a combined threat to the British from French and Indian forces. During what later became known as the Albany Congress, representatives from seven colonies — Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island — were going to meet to discuss the French threat and work on a treaty with the Iroquois Confederacy. As the Albany Congress approached, Franklin was concerned about a recent military loss to the French and he was clearly pondering a colonial alliance to confront more French aggression. A few days after the small military defeat, Franklin published an article about the loss, as reported by a young major in the Virginia Regiment, George Washington.
