The new episode of adventure time

This BMO episode, which is certainly charming but not as gripping as a regular episode, has me curious about where other episodes will go, but confident that it'll all look like "Adventure Time. Like "Rick and Morty," part of the fun is just imagining all of the creatures and characters who were dreamed up simply to fill the background of any particular scene. And this new episode is funny too, keeping up the goofy asides by characters, almost playing out like a parody on serious dialogue. It's totally endearing, and if you've ever wanted more BMO while watching "Adventure Time" this will more than satisfy that fix. Like the Charles Schulz version of a computer with limbs, BMO is always a robot with a golden heart that a smile of its own, and this episode always has that sweetness in mind. A significant change to HBO Max's approach is length.

While "Come Along With Me" served as a powerful end to the series, part of the episode's message involved life's lack of conclusion. Narrated by BMO from a distant future, "Come Along With Me" ends with new adventurers seeking out Finn and Jake's tree house, a reminder that stories may end but life goes on.

Together Again

Finn, Jake, and BMO are headed home after having their longest adventure yet, and as they sail across the ocean, they confront some of their deepest fears before getting back to the lives they left behind. As expected from a dream, the storytelling is very fragmented and cryptic, but I like Adventure Time when it enters a weirder, more surreal mode. The big shared fear amongst this trio is the fear of aging, but it manifests differently depending on the dreamer. Jake has the most intense dream, which explores his relationship with his dog family while his shapeshifting alien parent lurks in the background.
