Now that we're living in a post-"Frozen" and post-"The Lego Movie" world, we're beginning to expect more from kids' movies. Where once it was tolerable to sit through 90 minutes of bathroom jokes and crazy ridiculous songs " Afro Circus ," anyone? Yes, we can have smart dialogue and unpredictable story lines! Yes, we can have music that parents and kids will equally love! Gone are the days of over-the-top animal sidekicks!

But after they hear about a macaw spotting in the Amazon, they head to the jungle in search of more birds like them. Blu is from Minnesota and was raised by his human pal, Linda. Jewel, on the other hand, is elated to be reunited with her father and her old friends, including a suave macaw played by Bruno Mars.

It even introduces a quirky, love-struck, potentially evil poisonous frog named Gabi, voiced with Broadway pizazz by Kristin Chenoweth. There are too many bad guys to deal with — from the vengeful Cockatoo Nigel trying to kill Blu, to the evil logging mogul who mercilessly chops down the trees in which the macaws live.

Those are stressful moments, especially for young viewers who just want to watch happy, singing birds. Even an entertaining soccer match has an element of conflict attached to it. But for grown-ups, those wacky one-liners get old, quick. There are various high-energy salsa numbers, as well as radio-friendly songs by Bruno Mars and Janelle Monae. In that tiny, sheltered place, Blu rules the roost. Linda, much like Blu, is very sheltered and fears the larger world, but decides to go with Blu to Brazil so he can mate with this other bird. Once they arrive, Blu is put into a cage with Jewel, the last female of their kind.

But something was recently spotted that gives us a glimpse into the future of the company. Beginning July 22, the theater will screen a family-friendly film the second Saturday of each month at noon.
