Recontextualising history is no new feat for anime filmmakers. Set during the Edo Period, an era of Japanese history in which the nation saw an influx of international influences after an extensive interval of exclusivity up until the mids, Japanese borders were closed off to trade and travel routes , Samurai Champloo depicts the tale of two wandering samurai and their quest to help the spirited young woman locate a samurai who smells like sunflowers. And with the help of Nujabes and team, Watanabe was able to make it so, with the music becoming a staple of the series, enticing fans from all over the world to tune in, gradually turning a small cult following into an international phenomenon, and cementing the anime as one of the greatest of all time. With episodes dedicated to the emergence of baseball in Japan, urban graffiti sprawled across city walls, a travelling priest attempting to instil Christianity for monetary gain, Samurai Champloo works to take the traditionally secluded nature of the country and integrate anachronistic concepts as a way to personify the move from feudal to modernity. Mugen, one of the two staple samurai, is more beast than man, with a fighting style that seems more akin to breakdancing than the traditional stoic sensibilities of Jin, the other mainline samurai. Through the contrast of these characters, Watanabe conveys the changing attitudes of youth culture post World War Two.

It has a similar tone to the show, although it has a larger emphasis on the comedic elements I found. It still has the iconic mix of edo period Japan fused with hip hop and modern pop culture. It often references things that would have no place in the era but it just works somehow. It follows similar story beats to the anime although characte As a huge fan of the anime I was bound to either love or hate this manga adaptation, depending on how the source material was treated.
It follows similar story beats to the anime although characters and plot lines seem condensed or changed in certain places, sometimes for the better, sometimes at a detriment to it. For example Mugen and Jin are convinced to travel with Fuu purely because they ruined the tea house she was working at and so they owe her a debt, which is honestly out of character.
In the anime she literally blackmails them, she breaks them out of prison on the condition that they travel with her which makes more sense to me. It's only a small detail and I'm not actually that bothered about it but I digress. They only appear in a single chapter each but are memorable none the less.
Each main character tends to get their moment in the spotlight too with each one having at least one chapter revolving around a story involving them. I'll probably pick up the 2nd volume, if you enjoy Samurai manga or liked the anime I'd highly recommend it!

As an avid manga reader I've read many manga in many different styles but I've never come across one manga that is as entertaining, as hilarious, as wonderful as Samurai Champloo. The first thing that caught my attention was the art-style.
They're not the usual big-eyed, bishounen male characters that we find in some manga but rather rough around the edges characters that are somehow attractive in their own way. As for the characters themselves, there is Fuu, the little, dumb waitress that somehow As an avid manga reader I've read many manga in many different styles but I've never come across one manga that is as entertaining, as hilarious, as wonderful as Samurai Champloo. As for the characters themselves, there is Fuu, the little, dumb waitress that somehow manages to snag two very different men to look for a Samurai that smells like Sunflowers through a guilt-trip and sheer stubbornness.
Then comes Mugen, never-do-well, irresponsible, criminal, always looking for a fight thrown in together with a crude, vulgar personality. Finally there's Jin, refined, composed, elegant Samurai with no Lord searching for a reason to keep drawing his blade. This is their story mixed with leading the life of a criminal, A wayward Shogun, A Ninja's untimely love story, a playboy magistrate and An enjoyable read and recommended specially for those who watched the Anime and fell in love with it.

I really enjoyed this comic it kept me interested throughout the entire time reading. Jul 01, Illy rated it really liked it. I adored the anime, so when I found out there was a two volumes out I had to get them. Plus, the fact I found both at the same time on clearance at half price books made it even better. I feel as if you are the fan of the anime then you should really get these two volumes.

But we have to take into account though that this is one of those rare instances wherein the manga is based on the anime instead of the other way around.

Even some folks who aren't normally fans of anime still recognize this as a masterpiece of both storytelling and animation. It is a legend so needless to say any sequel or spiritual successor to it would have some big shoes to fill. Enter Samurai Champloo. Instead of mixing jazz and space gunfights, this series was mixing classic samurai tropes with hip-hop influences. It reviewed well when it came out and there are many that believe it to be just as good as Cowboy Bebop if not better. Yet it still never made quite as meteoric of an impact. Was it unfairly snubbed by critics and fans? Both anime series have some of the finest animation around. Cowboy Bebop slightly edges out Samurai Champloo though. Samurai Champloo is more stylized which is a plus to make its animation distinct, but again, on a whole, Cowboy Bebop is a masterpiece of animation.

Shinichiro Watanabe is known for being extremely creative with music in his anime. Music, in itself, becomes a character of his shows. As explained by the director himself , music comes to him along with the stories of the anime he writes and directs. So when he came up with the storyline of Samurai Champloo, he associated the show's protagonist, Mugen, with hip-hop and perceived him as a rapper samurai.

Similar genre, and similar animation style but two different entities- the magic potion for social media fan wars and comparisons. Both the series are known for their animation. While both the animes share a customary eye for detail, Cowboy Bebop has an edgy animation style while Samurai Champloo is more on the basic side. Shinichiro Watanabe talks about how both the animes revolve around the portrayal and acceptance of death. Both have themes that interest different kinds of viewers. Samurai Champloo grazes past darker, more serious themes like acceptance of indigenous Ainu people, foreigners, the LGBTQ community , and much more. Cowboy Bebop on the other hand is just an anime about a bunch of adventures in space, despite dealing with a few issues like politics and existentialism. Samurai Champloo with its Edo setting and portrayal of Samurai culture is significantly more difficult to manage and much more intriguing to watch.
