Is greed really good? Even at the cost of the world? At the cost of life? A world painted in shadows, gilded in fake gold Washed in pale colors. Sasami-san Ganbaranai, in simple terms, is a coming of age story. But even against the backdrop of such craziness the series tries to reconcile these two elements, the familiar and the fantastical, to make one emphatic statement: freedom is what gives life. Sasami is born into the Tsukuyomi clan, burdened with the duty to protect the power of Amaterasu, the goddess of the sun.

It gives the bearer the ability to shape the world in his or her own desires. Because the potential abuse of this power can lead to the destruction of mankind, the Tsukiyomi strictly train the vessels for this power, their priestesses, in all forms of abstinence and self control, barring them from the materialistic society outside. Sasami, the next in line to wield the divine gift, finds a way to escape the shrine and into the world she had never seen.

While the series spends a lot of time on how Sasami readjusts to normal life, the idea of freedom becomes a common thread in its short run. It is the utmost highest ideal a human can strive for and is more important than duty or responsibility even at the cost of gambling away the fate of mankind.

Sacrificing this capacity to perserve the future would basically be illogical. Sasami-san Ganbaranai uses the events that unfold as a metaphor for this sentiment. The dead returning to life, spirits warping the fabric of time and a woman growing a penis are examples of the extent the forces against Sasami must go to deny her freedom. The series tells us that in order to destroy what is essentially human nature, you must uproot the laws of the universe to get anywhere close.

Liberty is fact of life. Not even the gods themselves, who make quite a few appearances can take it away from Sasami, or anyone else. Sadly, some might only take this show at face value though, a crazy series of events whose only goal is to make you laugh.

The writing never asks the viewer to peel away the allegorical layers the show is wrapped in. Considering the amount of depth, it feels like a waste. While Sasami can be easily described as an average girl as average as an otaku gets I guess , the rest of her relationships could be labeled as strictly taboo.

Her brother, Kamiomi, worships her in an intense sexual fashion that can only be described as incestuous. He is unwavering in his service, from feeding to bathing and clothing her. Kamiomi makes it quite clear that his devotion to her stems from the fact that he will one day marry his younger sibling and take her innocence. More bizarrely, Sasami often shows that she reciprocates these feelings toward him, albeit hidden behind a flurry of punch and kicks towards her older brother.

The rest of the series is slathered with inappropriate sexuality and lesbian innuendo. There is so much going on in the actual plot itself, the flamboyant cast just feels like a distraction at points. The show would function much better as a whole if it could ground one element, namely the characters, firmly in the ground for the audience to relate to.

Instead the nature of the bonds between the cast goes further to alienate viewers from the setting at hand. Akiyuki Shinbou, the director, uses the interplay of shadow and light to characterize the visual look of the series and the different settings throughout the show.

His signature use of static screens is still present, but their appearances are scant and far between since the focus is more on the beautifully illuminated backdrops. Toning it down works for a series like Sasami-san Ganbaranai , which has enough insanity as it is. Sasami-san Ganbaranai is surprisingly deceptive. Hidden in the hysteria of the plot is an exceptional and deep narrative that frankly is easy to miss. For those willing to look past the cast of ludicrous but hilarious characters and spend some quality time with the actual story will find a deeply rewarding show that not only goes to explore the human condition but give meaningful insight in to the way it works.

Not even god can help…. How do you mess up mixing magic, science fiction, action and women? The answer is quite elementary my dear reader.

You coat it all in a veneer of convoluted mythology that tries to make sense of itself every once in a while. While watching Toaru Majutsu no Index I felt that I, as a viewer, was quite stupid for not understanding exactly what was going on, even though a character on screen had explained for a good five minutes what the situation was. Instead the show seems fixated on firing information at the viewer at rapid pace. Much of the problem lies in the show trying to delineate between two factions, Magic and Science.

It goes on to explain the differences between the two but not in a meaningful way. Mostly because the characters, which serve as foundations for each of their respective sides, often have their objectives shrouded in vagueness and their allegiances flip flopping between both groups. It blurs the divide the series tries so hard to define. Surprisingly the structure of the plot is quite simple.

The story follows Kamijou Touma, a rather insignificant high school student with a rather significant power. His right arm can negate any ability, be it magic or genetic. The series documents his adventures as he goes around helping various young women because of his selfless and heroic personality. He unwittingly adds each of them to the roster of his harem, which at times looks more like middle school classroom. The linearity of such a plot structure helps give the show some direction in the fugue of its mythology.

Most of the characters are flat as their chests. This can be directly attributed to the problems with the story. Most of the dialogue is used to explain what is going on rather than act as a vehicle for character growth. The one shining star in the entire constellations of negatives is the production. There is a great use of color thats helps separate out different arcs by color scheme. It gives each segment a strong sense of personality and theme.

In addition, the fluidity of the animation and the action sequences never dip in quality and deliver some excellent set pieces, such as a giant clay golem rampaging through an underground mall.

Aurally, Toaru Majutsu no Index is just as pleasant. Both opening themes by Kawada Mami are fantatsic. Her strong voice accompanies the mass of synths to weave some incredibly catchy tunes.

IKU succeeds with the closing themes as well, painting some strong ballads. Toaru Majutsu no Index could have been a good series. Hell, it could have been a great series if it just showed some focus. If it had left the fat on the cutting room floor, some more room could have been made for the characters and the actual story itself.

At the end of the day what left is a flaccid cast drowning in an overwritten story. If you want to skip directly to that, go here. From the standpoint of leaving the series on a good note, this episode was much better, returning a lot of the humor and interesting interplay between characters that was missing as the series had to wrap up the Tsukino attacks. And after a typical anime comedy slipup where Manabe sees Haruka practicing with Moritani and gets the wrong idea, they finally get the time together where it feels right to say it, and we get a very nice confession.

And both Haruka and Yoshihisa realize that there are times you want to hear someone say what you already know. And the important memory of walking away from Haruka, we see that she remembers tears and apologies as she walked away, for not being strong enough to protect Haruka. Haruka is happy to have her place. We also get an apology from Yuriko, who throughout the series has been promising to use Haruka to prove that her mother could have been a psychic.

Definitely far better than Episode 11 would have been. Based on a 4-panel manga, Kotoura-san is the happenings of a girl who was born with the ability to read the minds of the people around her. Far from being a boon, this has been more of a curse in her life as it has repeatedly driven her friends away, and even contributed to the implosion of her family as her parents both have affairs and abandon her with her grandfather.

The characters are interesting, with everyone having flaws of some sort or another. They play off each other fairly well, and work well in the show. The production of the series is Great, with some great direction giving us one of the most stunning opening episodes of a comedy series ever.

The depth of feeling that it produced was far outsized for the type of show it is. And the background music through the opening sequence was great, with the climax of the scene having no vocals as Haruka screams to the heavens, just an evocative melody, that drew tears from me. The OP is sung by Megumi Nakajima, and the usual ED is sung by Hisako Kanemoto, who also sings both songs in character during the show at karaoke… terribly.

Overall, the show works well, leading to a fun viewing experience. It was enjoyable to watch throughout, and entertaining for the majority of the show. Kodaka left us all, not to mention the Rinjin-bu, in the lurch at the end of the last episode, running away from the clubroom after Sena not only confessed, but proposed marriage to him out of the blue.

To make it worse, he runs into Yusa Aoi struggling with boxes, and ends up helping her with them. This leads to meeting Hidaka Hinata, the friendly seitokaichou, the girl that Yozora absolutely hates, and helping out the student council for a week.

Thankfully, Kodaka stops short of joining the student council, but what must everyone else think? Not only a very Yozora look, a very Yozora style. I found Hidaka Hinata to be an interesting character. The first thing that struck me about her: her similarities to Yozora. There are, of course, some other differences, but I think most of them are borne out of this one. Hinata likes to help other people, she likes to be with other people doing their best.

Yozora does not like to be with other people. But one on one, they really seemed to be similar to me. The focus of the episode was the confrontation between Kodaka and the other members of the club, especially Rika. Why does Yukimura want to be like him, want to become a man, continue to serve him? And the best answer he gets is that Yukimura just does.

Gacha Game

This episode was basically just there to reinforce how awesome Girge really is. It worked. As expected, the conclusion to Date A Live II was rushed and confusing, and posed more questions than it provided closure. And they all lived happily ever after. Including Diva, who underwent a complete change in personality after being saved by Shido. We knew nothing about Hanabusa before the start of the episode, and by the time she was dead at the end of the episode, we still only knew the bare minimum needed to give her a reason for fighting. Featuring mechanized puppets of the former classmates along with the real Takechi Otoya, who returned to the school after escaping prison for another shot at Haru , falling chandeliers, guns, grenades and other flashy stuff like that, it was much more dynamic than earlier episodes. And we actually got to see Haru fight… she has quite a merciless side to her, it seems! Only a slight increase for Mekaku City Actors this week, but it has gradually been climbing each week after placing last at the mid season point.

It aired in , so shut the fuck up. That out of the way, Nagi no Asukara has really beautiful animation even surpassing any Kyoto Animations anime. So much detail and so much fluency into this piece of art. Good job, P. I thought you guys knew better than this shit! When I was looking this shit up, I was expecting the most generic and boring shoujo romance anime ever.

Riddle Story of Devil follows the story of Tokaku Azuma, a transfer student to Myoujou Academy, a private school for the elite and creme de la creme of society. In enrolling into Class Black, Tokaku, along with eleven of her other classmates, enter into an assassination game of sorts, whereby the first to kill the thirteenth student of Class Black, sweet and innocent, Haru Ichinose, wins and will be granted the object of their greatest desire. The rules are clear, each assassin gets only one shot at an assassination attempt. Failing to achieve the objective results in immediate expulsion from not just the game but from the school itself.
