Animation is best when someone of any age can enjoy it, and the best way to achieve that is by mixing intelligence with humor no, not like the Big Bang. Few things are better than getting to laugh and feel smart at the same time, or watching a character do something so unexpected even the smartest among us would never see it coming. And sometimes it's nice to see a show that manages to be funny and deal with real problems. Well, here are eleven TV shows that have done and continue to do all of those things in one way or another.

Humour has the power to cut through conflict, and art has the power to bypass reason. Cartoons equal art plus humour. So all credit to the 4th Future of Cities Forum for using comics to log in real time what delegates were debating and concluding in their workshops last week.
Drawnalism is the name of the artist who was commissioned, who in reality is two people: the cartoonists Matt Buck and Alex Hughes.
They were bought in by the organisers, Energy Cities, to lighten up what can be a too-serious process of tackling the world's problems, by tapping into people's creativity and encouraging lateral thinking as a form of problem-solving.
Coincidentally Matt and I have worked together before, on two series of cartoon strips, Public Servants and Managing Hell. It is really good to see him in action, both of us now working to promote sustainability in cities. The first cartoon kind of sets the stage for the discussions, as delegates laid out the problems facing cities on the route to sustainability:.

Cartoons are a great way to facilitate decision-making, and create memorable but enjoyable encodings of the messages that arise from that creative process.
They reach the place other forms of communication cannot. FutureOfCities is to be congratulated for having the imagination themselves to commission cartoonists to work with them.

An Israeli animation company for pre-schoolers is attracting networks in the US, Canada, Europe and even Qatar with content that is aimed to expand creativity, knowledge and fun. Cartoons for kids have been around for almost a century and have evolved from a medium that focused on pure entertainment to a vehicle that aims to expand creativity, knowledge, reasoning, social development and motor skills in an atmosphere of fun and wonder. Smartoonz appears poised to become a leader in providing quality entertainment and educational programs for the pre-school set. Levy was already well known in the Israeli animation business, thanks to Zeppelin Animations, where he produced programs and ads for local television programs and movies.

The drawing, with a fine-line pen-and-ink look, is packed with detail, the writing is fresh and offbeat, with a fine sense of pop-cultural bemusement. Lines like "Humans have no appreciation for Swedish creature feature movies, not even Swedish humans" and "Since when does disgracing the Gettysburg Address plus explosions equal a movie? The episodes build serially, in the way of live-action shows, toward a revelation. It is a little too easy to binge-watch; you will have to wait for October for more. With its child warriors battling a supernatural foe to which the adult world is insensible, it is a sci-fi of a classic sort — "Stranger Things" is a cousin — which even the characters know.
