Gandalf, you are magic! Bilbo Baggins has been recruited for an adventure. Hired by Gandalf to join a quest led by dwarves, Bilbo finds himself on a quest to free the Misty Mountain from the dragon Smaug. The movie originally aired on NBC on November 27, and was rather well received by critics. The Hobbit was my first introduction to Tolkien and in addition to my sister reading the book to me, I can remember listening to the read-a-long record book of this movie over and over again. With the bloated and over-produced Hobbit films directed by Peter Jackson now released, I wanted to revisit this childhood film…and find it better at less than ninety minutes.

User reviews Review. Top review. This was what introduced me to the Lord of the Rings, back in '77, when I was in 6th grade, it got the kids in my class to reading the trilogy and etc.
We were crushed in my family. Loved it-the voices and artwork both. Didn't actually See this til ' Yes its done by Japanese animators, and No it isn't outta Allen Lee or whomever else' kind of drawing. But they stuck some interesting spins on what elves, dwarves, Wizards, Dragons and Hobbits look like, along with trolls and whatever, personally I found it to be interesting.
And how can you knock the voices-I mean-John Huston? Some legends here guys, esp. Otto and JHuston. I loved it! Rankin-Bass did make it more for kids, definately, and took some cuts here and there-Beorn and the Arkenstone bye-bye, for example, and no one is claiming the animation is up to, say, 'Aladdin' standards, but on its own, it works fine.

The Hobbit is a curious beast. I remember reading an article about this television adaptation of The Hobbit , in Starburst Magazine during the late seventies. This was presumably to cash in on the success of Ralph Bakshi's animated feature film adaptation of The Lord of The Rings. However, this never happened to my knowledge. However, a lot of the animation was sub contracted to Japanese studios, which was a standard practise at the time. This subsequently had a major impact on the production design and the aesthetics of the film. Naturally, original Tolkien's work with its abundance of songs and verse, lent itself to this very well.

In his treasure are actual little gems, a tiiiny Arkenstone, and enough 22k gold leaf to even satisfy a Dwarf, briefly. This shiny, jewel-encrusted wyrm will be one of the prizes in my art giveaway for the winner to choose from! I did this as an indulgence just because I think Sylvester McCoy has a glorious face, and I loved the idea of framing Radagast with lovely living things. Same movie, same audio, same running time, but with wholly new and higher quality animation? After reading the book as a little boy in the late '70s, I discovered this film soon thereafter in the town library in New Canaan, CT. After school I would walk over and watch it on a little machine prepared for me by one of the librarians. The drawings of the Goblins and Wood Elves were never surpassed. Great dialogue, awesome music. Much better movie than Jackson's version.

The film is an adaptation of the book of the same name by J. The dwarves ridicule the idea, but Bilbo, indignant, joins despite himself. The group travels into the wild, where Gandalf saves the company from trolls and leads them to Rivendell, where Elrond reveals more secrets from the map. When they attempt to cross the Misty Mountains they are caught by goblins and driven deep underground. Although Gandalf rescues them, Bilbo gets separated from the others as they flee the goblins.
