Yozakura quartet hana no uta

Hime informs Lily that within this city, humans and yokai co-exist peacefully thanks to the seven pillars that encircle the city; made from the trunks of seven large sakura trees. Because this is a place where humans and yokai co-exist, there are half-yokai humans living amongst them too. One significant one is Kotoha, who has the power to summon objects just by describing them. The group of extraordinary teens quickly gets to work to bring peace back to the town. The animation does take a bit getting used to, as the colors seem very washed out at times this seems intentional and the art style is somewhat heavily stylized. The soundtrack for this series is also very good, fitting with all the action this series delivers.

Due to this connection, youkai have come to live in the town and coexist alongside its human residents. The Hiizumi Life Counseling Office exists in order to uphold the pleasant atmosphere of the town. Headed by Hiizumi Akina Kaji Yuki and including the young mayor of Sakurashin, Yarizakura Hime Fukuen Misato and their friends, the group protects the town and the people they love from those who would disrupt their peace and daily lives.

As one might expect from the town-centric premise, Yozakura Quartet hosts a reasonably large, varying cast of eccentric and likable characters. Many of them are highly entertaining in their own right but what they all bring to the table collectively is perhaps even more impressive and important to the show. In the way they are each characterized and interact with each other, the cast presents a stunningly genuine sense of community.

Everyone seems to know everyone. What each character means to the other varies a great deal from person to person and this allows the show to accent the individuality of its characters while continuously playing them off of one another.

Something worth noting is that the supernatural element of the show is presented very naturally in Sakurashin. This helps build towards a more immersive image but also plays into the aspect of community I mentioned earlier.

The extraordinary becomes ordinary. The characters feel like they belong in their setting and that they have lives outside of the frame of the narrative. Above all else, the best thing that the cast of Yozakura Quartet has going for it is their pronounced sense of personality. Through each of their many relationships, the main characters and supporting cast alike refine each other to the point of clarity. The cast is very lively, features many entertaining, supernatural powers, and is generally just very likable.

Their fun-loving, warm attitudes and sense of kinship with each other makes them a lot of fun to watch despite how simplistic their characterization is. The animation of Yozakura Quartet is what I personally find so enthralling about the show.

The director, ryo-timo, has an extensive background as an animator and it shows. In the same way that the characters emanate liveliness in how they talk and act, the way in which they are animated goes above and beyond in highlighting their respective personality traits. The fight scenes, while infrequently occurring, are pervasive enough and a real thrill to watch when they roll around. Yozakura Quartet is an interesting show in how it strikes an odd balance between a relaxed, whimsical, slice of life atmosphere and plot-driven action sequences and light narrative development.

Perhaps the biggest fault of the story is in just how straightforward it is. Sakurashin is a peaceful town full of boisterous and likable characters and one day an enemy appears that aims to disrupt this calm and merge the human world with that of the youkai in order to bring about destruction. At first glance, Enjin might appear somewhat comically evil in how he wants to destroy the peaceful town however when you learn more about the history of Sakurashin and its clans, some relatively intriguing mystery elements rise to the forefront of the story.

While Youkai coexist with humans in Sakurashin, it is not their native land as they of course belong in the world to which the town is connected through The Seven Pillars.

Some viewers may be disappointing by how rarely this subplot surfaces and the lingering questions that surround it however I think it adds a compelling element to the story. Certain story arcs are spent fleshing out specific characters or exhibiting the way in which the cast interacts with each other and given how much personality the show has, these episodes are quite entertaining. While not an aggressively thematic show, there are certainly some pervasive ideas that circulate, influence the characters, and manifest as key elements within the plot.

The idea of legacy is especially important to Akina and Hime who each are following in the footsteps of their guardians despite their young age and the theme arises elsewhere as well. When these scenes appear, the resulting sound is absolutely colossal, ominous, and overwhelming — seemingly blowing out your speakers to the point of feedback. This impressive, powerful depiction of the lightning strikes really accents their danger and energy. The show goes further with this, utilizing a similar effect to impress upon the viewer intensity and hopelessness in certain scenes.

Between its visuals, cast of characters, sound design, and engaging narrative elements, Yozakura Quartet is a show that has a lot going for it. Its story is deceptively simple at face value for how intriguing it can be and the show has reasonably good comedy, character writing, and individual character arcs to balance out its potential narrative shortcomings. I gave Yozakura Quartet an 8 because it featured a large, interweaving cast of memorable characters that portrayed a really strong sense of connectivity and community through their frequent interactions and complicated relationships.

If you like shows about large casts of people all intermingling in eccentric and outlandish ways then Yozakura Quartet is the show for you. To clarify which shows fall under the umbrella of this review and the order in which you watch them: Yozakura Quartet: Hana no Uta comes first.

Ignore the original adaptation. Like Liked by 1 person. I think the two shows certainly fall into a similar vein. Hundreds of years ago, the borders between the worlds of humans and youkai temporarily overlapped, resulting in many residents of both crossing over to the other side. In the years since this event, the city of Sakurashin has become a central hub for all inter-dimensional affairs—a result of both the sacred Seven Pillars around the city serving as a beacon for the youkai, and the efforts of the Hiizumi Life Counseling Office in keeping the townsfolk happy. This office is composed of Hime Yarizakura, the young mayor of the city; satori Ao Nanami, who can read people's minds; half-youkai Kotoha Isone, who can summon anything by speaking a word; oni siblings, Kyousuke and Touka Kishi; and the office director Akina Hiizumi, who inherited his family's ability to force youkai back to their world. Besides volunteer and arbitration work, the Life Counseling Office also suppresses any Strikes: rare occurrences where humans are suddenly infused with youkai powers and go on a rampage. But the appearance of a sinister man signals trouble as Strikes become increasingly common, political rivals make their moves, and malicious individuals descend upon the city. As the self-appointed defenders of Sakurashin, it's up to the Life Counseling Office to protect the idyllic city they call home!

Yozakura Quartet: Hana no Uta Discussions

To be honest, I never expected a new Yozakura Quartet series to ever be made. But watching this episode reminded me of what made the OVA so incredibly captivating. The storytelling in Hana no Uta feels incredible natural, and never seems to break from its playful and simple tone. The other thing was the great chemistry between its characters; this is one of the few shows where the cast of characters achieves a great balance, and everyone is capable of playing off each other in really fun ways. Through the eyes of the lost child Lily later revealed to be a bodacious magical witch antagonist we are reintroduced to the world of Yozakura Quartet and its characters: Lily first stumbles onto Isone Kotoha Sawashiro Miyuki , a Kotadama-powered half-youkai, and Kishi Touka Tomatsu Haruka , an ogre with super strength.

Recap: Touka saves Kana and Mina from a car accident, but causes a lot of damage in the process. Kyousuke calls Akina out for not following up on the responsibilities he has towards the daemon community. I wonder how this show managed to get away with showing two toddlers graphically getting their necks crushed, though. Is it because they were only mostly dead? Blatant bait-and switch aside, though, the car accident is a nice way to one, blow your animation budget through the mansard roof; two, reveal that Kana and Mina are vampires; three, establish Touka and Kyousuke, who have been hovering around for the past few episodes without any real introduction and four, finally unveil what is up with Akina, and the village as a whole. You sure took your time, young lion. Thanks, Rousseau. The plot is relatively linear, characters only pop up when they need to —except for Yae, whose whole schtick seems to be never showing up when she needs to and always when no one wants her around — and we finally get some answers.

Ao no Exorcist: Kyouto Fujouou-hen Vol. Man we really dropped the ball on Yozakura Quartet this season. And I completely understand them wanting to finish up the last episode of the season. In light of Cthuko disbanding and dropping Yozakura Quartet, DameDesuYo will be finishing up the season starting from either 11 or 12 depending on how good the NotCthuko release is. Well, what do you know — that almost felt like an actual ending. It drifts and sputters sometimes, but when it focuses on something it can deliver surprisingly compelling plot, and the atmospherics are pretty reliable even when the plot is AWOL. His story is all quirks and characters under-reacting to the ridiculous and episodes that seem to start and stop in the middle of other episodes.
