Sean Connery’s bizarre animated swan song
While he'll forever be known to many as James Bond, there's no doubting that Sir Sean Connery enjoyed one of the longest, finest and most distinguished careers of any film actor before officially retiring in the mids. Countless memorable performances and a Academy Award for his role in The Untouchables have cemented that legendary legacy, but sadly, his final film, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen , left a sour taste in the mouths of so many adoring fans.
Fortunately, Connery returned to film work in to voice Sir Billi, the hero of an eponymously-titled Scottish animated film, which is based on a short that Connery also worked on in While Sir Billi is finally getting released overseas next month, it may not be the triumphant return to the big screen for Connery that many fans were hoping for.
Just take a look a the trailer above. After viewing the trailer, it's not surprising that the film was universally panned when it premiered at several festivals last year. The computer animation is definitely subpar when compared to films from Dreamworks or Pixar and that cheesy voiceover seems to border on unintentional parody.

A heart warming and action packed family movie where thrilling car chases, heroic skydiving and daring stunts from this octogenarian, fueled with encounters with a hostile submarine, will keep you at the edge of your seat! Sure, it's easy to laugh at this stuff, but as a film aimed at young children, Sir Billi could provide plenty of enjoyment.
Unfortunately, it probably won't get a wide distribution and won't be seen by many moviegoers outside of the United Kingdom. It's certainly sad to think that Sir Billi will almost assuredly mark Connery's last film performance and while many fans would have loved to see him end his film career in a more thrilling, dramatic, action-packed or kick-ass way, it's understandable that he went the route that he did considering his age 82 , and the fact that he is most likely enjoying his retirement from energy-draining big budget spectacles.

Perhaps the most important trait of all good-bad films is that they take themselves seriously. No bad film, before or since, has ever taken itself as seriously as Sir Billi though. A caustic blend of nightmarish animation, tonal dissonance and fading star-power meant this film was set up for a roasting even without the assertions of its producers, who went on a public offensive in its defence. After all, it was a real Scottish film — not some vehicle for a former Saturday Night Live star from Canada. Aside from being a better film on every technical front, Brave was also a resounding success financially — grossing five-times its production cost, and playing in cinemas across some 72 countries.

The octogenarian — dubbed the Guardian of the Highlands — shows no signs of slowing down, however he is put the test when he embarks on a fantastical mission to save Bessie Boo Valentina Hartmann , a beaver who is also an illegal fugitive naturally. First and foremost — and where Sir Billi suffers most greatly, is within the ugly style of animation. You have to appreciate this is of course low-budget, but there is a way of remaining charming, despite the lack of funds — take South Park, for instance. This just looks like the sort of cheap product an advertising company would knock up to promote personalised birthday cards. However beneath the surface, there needs to be some heart and some meaning of sort, yet this lacks greatly in both. Inane and illusory adventure movies like this can work if done properly.

That is the only reason that I can think of for his investing money, executive-producing, and voice-acting in the forthcoming first Scottish CGI animated feature, Sir Billi. The Cartoon Brew website has the latest trailer , which is unbelievable. The humans and talking animals are the ugliest that I have ever seen.
