The best films that mix live action and animation
Though " Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs " didn't win its Oscar nomination for best original score, Disney was given an honorary award to recognize the feature's innovation in filmmaking. Disney didn't only receive one statue. He received one regular-sized statue and seven miniature Oscars to denote the film's seven dwarfs. After a few nominations, Disney won its first major Academy Awards for one of its animated features. After around two decades of mostly forgettable movies, Walt Disney Animation Studios produced " The Little Mermaid " to critical acclaim.
It won the Oscar for best original score, and " Under the Sea " won for best original song. The movie was nominated for six Oscars, winning for best score and best original song, for the song "Beauty and the Beast. The movie also received a best picture nomination, the first animated movie in history to do so, as well as one for best sound. It retains the title of the animated movie with the most Oscar nominations, tied with 's "Wall-E.
The movie received the same awards as its predecessor, for best score and best song, honoring "A Whole New World. The songs "Circle of Life" and "Hakuna Matata" were also nominated in the song category.
Pixar studios, founded by a class of ex-Disney animators, released its first feature, "Toy Story," which was instantly hailed as a masterpiece. The movie received three nominations, plus a special achievement award for director John Lasseter.
But the traditional Disney movie remained dominant in the end. For the Oscars, both Disney's "Hercules" and 20th Century Fox's "Anastasia" received nominations, but they were shut out by the dominance of "Titanic.
It was also nominated in the best adapted screenplay award. The movie's English-language dub and release were supervised by Disney.
The movie won in the best animated film category over "Brother Bear" and "The Triplets of Belleville. Disney's "Home on the Range" is completely ignored by the Academy while " The Incredibles " nabs the animated feature and sound editing categories and racks up nominations for original screenplay and sound mixing.
The other animated feature nominees are "Shrek 2" and "Shark Tale. Disney Animation's offering, "Chicken Little," was shut out of the Oscars. It followed a years-long fallow period for Disney's in-house animated films. It was just a month before the release of "Cars. Aside from a best animated feature win, the movie was also nominated in the original screenplay, score, sound editing, and sound mixing categories.
The lack of best picture nominations for " Wall-E " and "The Dark Knight" that year, however, rankled the movie industry and led the Academy to expand the category to ten nominees. It was later changed so that somewhere between five and ten nominees would be admitted depending on an algorithm.
Because the best picture category was expanded to ten nominees, " Up " became the first Pixar movie — and the first animated movie since "Beauty and the Beast" — to be nominated in that category. It lost to "The Hurt Locker. The other animated feature nominees that year were strong: "Fantastic Mr. A follow-up to the first two "Toy Story" movies that made Pixar a formidable force in the s, " Toy Story 3 " became one of Pixar's most acclaimed movies, and received a best picture Oscar nomination along with a win in the animated feature category it lost to "The King's Speech".
The movie also won an original song Oscar, for "We Belong Together," and nominations for adapted screenplay and sound editing. Pixar, however, was completely shut out with their panned offering "Cars 2," and Disney's "Winnie the Pooh" wasn't nominated for anything. Pixar was victorious again with " Brave ," which didn't receive any other nominations. The other nominees in the animated feature category were "Frankenweenie," "ParaNorman," "The Pirates!
Pixar's "Monsters University," on the other hand, was ignored at the Oscars. For the first time, Pixar released two movies in a single year. It wasn't nominated for best picture, though.
Pixar's entry won once again in Though Pixar released its long-awaited "Incredibles" sequel in , it wasn't the ultimate Oscar winner. The movie was produced by Sony, even though they allowed Disney to make a series of Peter Parker-starring live-action movies as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The other nominees in the category included another Disney production, "Ralph Breaks the Internet," along with "Mirai" and "Isle of Dogs. Originally announced in , and delayed a few times, a major script rewrite didn't prevent the sequel from still winning best animated picture. In the cartoon, a man is nervously preparing dinner for his date… and then it all goes straight to the ninth circle of hell. As he hurriedly prepares dinner, he accidentally switches from recipe-to-horrible-recipe, creating a hodgepodge of nasty ingredients. Then, the Casanova presents a covered serving tray to his date. He uncovers the dinner, and reveals an image that has been seared into the brains of thousands of children: an eerily detailed drawing of a rolled up tongue, an eyeball with lower lid still attached , bloody bones, and a severed human foot. As Casanova and his horrified date examine the meal, the tongue slowly unfurls, and twitches as he quickly slams the cover back onto the tray. If only the cartoon ended there.

As a kid who grew up in the '90s, I can fondly recall popping in a VHS tape first thing in the morning only to rewind it and replay it all day long and they say screen time is a recent issue. I had a steady rotation of well-loved tapes that I stacked next to the small, boxy television in my room only-child perks , many of which were animated. Although most adults look back fondly on the Disney movies of that decade , there were so many bangers in the animated movie category that came out in those 10 years that didn't stem from Walt Disney, which people tend to forget about.
For a very long time, Saturday morning was the time when most people, particularly children, would enjoy animation. Almost all of the major networks devoted a significant block of programming time to cartoon shows that were geared toward kids. Though the movie was very much geared toward adults—with much of the humor not suitable for children—the same cannot quite be said of its cartoon adaptation. In this case, the animated series seems to take place in a time period after the original movies, with Marty and Doc traveling through time.

Since their debut in , they've been responsible for some of the most popular animated franchises of the last 30 years, including "Dexter's Laboratory" and "The Powerpuff Girls. The s, however, were a golden age for the network. Shows like "Adventure Time," "Regular Show," and "Steven Universe" found enthusiastic audiences outside of Cartoon Network's typical age demographic, even without getting weird or raunchy enough to qualify for the channel's Adult Swim section. The decade known for bright colors, grunge music, and Saturday morning cartoons is the subject of nostalgia on television, cinema, and even in fashion. Of course, not all animation from the era is so well-remembered. Some were lost to time because they simply weren't very good in the eyes of most. Others were only relevant to a particular time and place, and some deserve more recognition and credit but somehow never seem to get mentioned.
