A new Tom and Jerry series is coming to HBO Max in less than a month, building on the success of the movie that premiered back in February. The show premieres on Thursday, July 1. Tom and Jerry in New York finds the arch-rivals both living in the Royal Gate Hotel, though it looks like their adventures will take them beyond its walls and all over the city. While Tom and Jerry was a hybrid of CGI, animation and live-action, this show will be entirely animated by Renegade Studios — which has handled many Tom and Jerry productions in recent years.

With a free trial of HBO Max in hand, my roommate and I set out to watch the latest installment of a childhood favorite. What we found was a surprisingly funny movie with a rudimentary plot that was just about good enough. Tom is working the streets with his piano, playing for tips. Tom and Jerry end up at a prestigious hotel where a famous couple is set to get married. That is part of the reason many critics disliked this film.
The center of their conflict is with preparation for the wedding between celebrity couple Preeta Pallavi Sharda and Ben Colin Jost. The human cast in this movie almost feels like a throwaway, even with a few quality comedic actors.
The movie was not taking itself that seriously. What made Tom and Jerry a long-running pair of characters is the pioneering of slapstick humor in animation. There is plenty of that in this movie. It takes Tom and Jerry to the streets of New York, a relatively new place for the both of them. This means we get to see Tom falling down a skyscraper on to the ground multiple times in a row, Jerry making an apartment for himself in the vent of a hotel and the two chasing one another between the busy streets of NYC, among other interesting set pieces.
The human characters are generally boring and just tiredly push the story along. But overall, the movie seems unnoteworthy and basic, pushes a romance as uninspired as the overall script and slides out of one ear as soon as it enters the other.

The year was rough for movies is only slightly better , but HBO Max decided to roll with the punches and release its movies both on its streaming service for one month, while also showing them in select theaters. So far, this plan has worked well. Wonder Woman was one I was disappointed to see debut on the small screen, but what can you do! With kids in and out of school because of the outbreak, I need all the family movies I can get!

Now, the team behind the looney revival have stepped back into the Warner Bros. In anticipation for the upcoming Tom and Jerry movie coming to theaters and streaming on February 26, , HBO Max has dropped two brand-new cartoons starring the titular cat and mouse. At the time of this writing, only two shorts are currently listed on the service: On a Roll and The House the Cat Built. Each short clocks in at roughly 5 minutes. WarnerMedia has yet to issue a statement regarding the release of these shorts. It is currently unknown if more entries to the Tom and Jerry Special Shorts collection will be added to the service in the future. True story: One of this writer's first teenage jobs was as a camp counselor, and one of my first assignments in that role was taking a dozen year-olds on a rainy day to the local movie theater to see 's Tom and Jerry: The Movie. If you haven't seen it, that was the supposedly "modern-minded" reboot that had Tom and Jerry talking, avoiding violence, becoming friends I spent 90 miserable minutes chasing them around the theater as they attempted to do anything but watch it; hush-screaming at them to sit down, I learned a lesson: There are few things worse than taking kids to see a movie made for them, but that doesn't even understand what they want. Not to make things all about yours truly, but this time around I have a year-old son who has been anticipating the film so much he's been watching and re-watching the trailer on YouTube for months. So at the risk of making the same mistake twice, I asked a kid to watch a Tom and Jerry movie with me. This new movie declares its own rules immediately, as a trio of rapping pigeons flies around New York in the opening credits.
