The art, visuals, and animation were superb. The story? Actually, it was very pleasing and well-balanced. Plus, the characters and their development especially romantic development shined very brightly.

But just so you know, it didn't end yet. It was open-ended, which leaves room for a few more seasons in the future.

Japanesiness: Japanese name order. No honorifics. So one word changes color based on the visuals. Overall, the typesetting was good when it was done. But enough of it was passed over that the final result is not super impressive. These almost seemed to be worked by an entirely different staff than was responsible for the main script. The song translations were done well enough that I felt I properly understood the meaning of the song and how it fit with the visuals on the screen. This is not an incorrect translation, but it is a bad translation nonetheless.

The series revolves around Chihiro Furuya, a high school student with all the looks and personality of a forgettable nobody. Apparently, the viewer is supposed to connect with Chihiro on some emotional level and see themselves in his place. In short: He sexualizes female zombies and wants one of his very own.
Sankarea Undecided. Sankarea looks to be riding on their coattails with its generic pretty girl and cat-haired male lead. And yet, I read a few reviews, notably from The Cart Driver and Guardian Enzo , that tempted me to ignore the warning bells going off in my head.

Sankarea is essentially a meet cute scenario of a zombie by the name of Sanka Rea voiced by Maaya Uchida and the zombie fanatic Chihiro Furuya voiced by Ryohei Kimura, add a dash of love triangle romance and deep character development of most of the core cast and we have Sankarea. Chihiro does touch on the subject of freedom but the thematic weight goes more to Rea, Chihiro more or less goes into what happens if your wish was granted and it both changes you as a person but that you lose that want once you obtained it. Sayuri Yahagi and Maaya Uchida…of course.
