Optimus Prime passed away on August 8, It was 30 full years ago today, when Transformers: The Movie debuted, that the heroic robot sacrificed his own life to defeat the evil Megatron. I was nine when Transformers: The Movie came out. My great-grandparents had died when I was too young to understand what that meant; to me, they were occasionally around, and then they were not occasionally around. One of the cartoons I watched… as a movie? That I could see in a movie theater?

The original Transformers movie is one of the weirdest kids’ films ever made
Autobot City is an earth based outpost. This same name creates an association of the outpost, and the robot Metroplex in the minds of fans even though Metroplex does not appear in the Transformers movie, but did appear in the toyline of the same year. Autobot City shares some similar features to Metroplex in his battle and city alt modes. Autobot Cities towers and ramps are in the style of Metroplex. And TFwiki notes that a specific part of Metroplex is present in most but not all versions of Autobot City.
Autobot City appears only briefly for the first time in Transformers The Movie , before the inevitable decepticon attack. There are various designs and concepts that were eventually synthesized into the final version we see on screen. Including a more traditonal design that used high walls surrounding the perimeter aping garrisons and forts in the ancient world. You know the drill. The Cons attack, Autobots defend, Prime and Megatron fight to the death.
The sense of urgency during the attack sequence is palpable, if not for Hot Rod spotting the sneak attack moments before it happened, our heroes could have fallen right here in these moments with perhaps no survivors. Prime confronts Megatron, could this be the Autobots darkest hour? Then autobot city transforms into… Metroplex… and the day is saved! Beating back the decepticons who turn tail and run, optimus and our heroes live.
The End. And why is Metroplex also referred to as Autobot City? This is the kind of nonsense that festers in my mind decades later, when I inevitably rewatch the film today and see… no reference to Metroplex whatsoever. If metroplex had been around for this opening movie battle, he could have beaten back the deceptions almost single handedly. It would likely have been a one sided battle in favor of the Autobots and a fairly short movie.
So apparently Metroplex was out to lunch during the events of the movie. Perhaps he was in stasis lock or still on cybertron? We will never know as toy based characters just appeared on the show frequently with no explanation of how any of them met or where they came from before appearing on earth HINT: it was the toy factory. Metroplex did appear in the Scramble City anime special in in Japan along with Ultra Magnus, Prime, Trypticon and a whole boatload of combiners.
The special did a good job at promoting some of the new toylines as well as being an entertaining if confusing anime short. The Japanese continuity is its own thing, but any excuse to get a giant robot-man fighting a giant robot dinosaur is good with me. Creating confusion in the film and toyline, Autobot City starts to transform manually during the attack sequence hinting that maybe this is Metroplex. There is no alt mode. No stunning transformation into a skyscraper tall super robot, no kaiju battle with Trypticon or saving of our beloved Autobots to be had here.
Adding still further confusion is the Autobot City seen in the retailer commerical preview with early footage that didnt make it into the film with the city in Attack mode, notably in a bold white color, the same color as Metroplex and also more detailed. Floro Dery full had his lush illustrated design for Autobot City which definitely features a more spectacular attack mode, but does not turn into any kind of robot.
But Dery also worked on storyboards, so who can say if it was just a note to himself perhaps? However off base it was, the Floro Dery design is spectacular, beautiful and no doubt would have been a real headache to animate in full as it rises up from the ground.
How effective it would be with its undercarriage exposed as a fortress? This led to the relationship between Metroplex and the city being vague and variable in the cartoon itself.
The Marvel Comics adaptation of the film used an earlier version of the script draft before final changes were made as it had to me made ahead of time to be published in a timely fashion, and that also explains why the extended Magnus death scene deleted from the movie makes an appearances. Sadly our manbot Metroplex does not appear in the film, nor Trypticon, nor most of the combiners.
It would have been nice to at least have given the iconic citybots a walk on cameo! In a film with dozens of characters and a garbled plot cut even shorter for run time, it makes sense not to saddle a busy film with another twenty plus characters to voice and animate. After the movie, Autobot City the outpost was seen in Season 3 of the show frequently and also turns up in the Japanese Headmasters TV show.
We would often see Metroplex parked out the back, or having a Kaiju fight nearby making them two distinct things, further seperating and defining both Autobot City and Metroplex from the confusion of the movie and its concept ideas.
So to answer where was metroplex during the film? I would have liked to have seen Metro in the film. You could say the same of Omega Supreme and his inexplicable absense.

Hit the rewind button please! Metroplex was pretty much everywhere in and subsequent years BUT in the movie.

At first I thought that they maybe couldn't get a hold of the voice actor, but the dinobots don't really say much throughout the movie, so keeping Snarl quiet would've been fine.

I n the first Transformers movie was released. After the success of the first two seasons of the original animated series, the movie spin-off The Transformers: The Movie to give it is full and unnecessary title was considered a big deal for fans. Multiple characters, good and evil, are killed off within the first 30 minutes of the film — including the all-conquering, untouchable Optimus Prime.
