Thanks to its syndication on channels like Cartoon Network and The WB, along with immensely popular albeit scattershot home video releases, "Dragon Ball Z" became an entire generation's introduction to anime.

It's also in the middle of a huge revival in fan interest — last year marked the series' 25th anniversary, and also saw the premiere of " Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods ", the first new project with a story by creator Akira Toriyama in 18 years. This year, the "Dragon Ball Z" revival continues with " Resurrection F ", a second film that revisits what fans consider one of the best stories from the original series.

That movie took us by surprise," says Christopher Sabat, a veteran voice actor famous for his role as the English voice of fan-favorite characters Vegeta and Piccolo across various English dubs, remasters, and video games over the past fifteen years.

Christopher Sabat plays Vegeta left , the co-lead of Funimation. Sabat has been involved with all things "Dragon Ball Z" since , when American distributor Funimation committed to building its own in-house voice cast after an initial mids attempt to bring the series to American audiences failed to garner interest.

And then we started going to conventions, and there was this giant fan outpouring — I'd never been to a convention before — and we suddenly realized that there was this giant fan base for it. According to Sabat, these new movies — the first in almost two decades — are coming at a perfect time, one where fan conventions are more popular than they've ever been and anime is far more accessible thanks to popular streaming services like Hulu and more specialty platforms like Crunchyroll.

Sabat also plays fan-favorite character Piccolo right Funimation. Con culture is growing, so many people are going to conventions and they don't even have to be super fans to go — they know the name Comic-Con and they're like, 'I'm gonna go check one of those things out. I was just [at] Tampa Bay Comic-Con over the weekend, and somebody brought me an action figure that I had signed thirteen years ago. And I resigned it in gold and said 'Come back in !

To Sabat, that's one of the most rewarding parts of being involved in bringing "Dragon Ball Z" to America — seeing the way the show has inspired its many fans as they grew up. It's incredible, none of us ever knew that it'd be anything like this. Keep reading. US Markets Loading H M S In the news. Tech News. Joshua Rivera. Share icon An curved arrow pointing right. Dragon Ball Z was a revelation to year-old me. Gone was the slapstick silliness of most children's cartoons, in were sprawling sagas full of drama, character development, and overblown fight scenes in which planets were destroyed by colorful heroes; and villains were as dedicated to hurting each other as they were to excruciatingly long pre-fight dialogue. Although the original Dragon Ball was broadcast in Japan back in , before making its way to western audiences via Cartoon Network and its spin-off channel Toonami in the lates and earlys, its popularity has never faded. If anything, the fandom has grown, despite there being a year absence of new episodes between the end of Dragon Ball GT in and the start of Dragon Ball Z Kai in With the release of the new film Dragon Ball Super: Broly this month, the franchise looks set to attract an ever wider audience. What's strange is that—as we literally just established—a huge fanbase has existed for years, and while there have been 20 animated DBZ movies released since , this is only the second to get a UK showing. So why did the powers-that-be decide to treat British audiences to a theater release of Broly?

If you're an American boy, perhaps you grew up watching Toonami 's popular import of Japan's formative shonen anime megahit, Dragon Ball Z. With its seven-year run of episodes, DBZ 's crossover appeal helped launch anime's earliest boom in the U. Anime is a wonderland of brilliant colors, unique concepts, ambitious direction, awesome energy, rich characterizations, and perplexing vulgarity. And also, garbage. It is strange, then, that the most reliably popular anime franchise among kids in the U. I don't get it. Why do boys love Dragon Ball Z? How is it one of the most beloved anime series ever despite its flat characterizations, simp writing, and tedious fight choreography?

Goku and company have gone against some fantastical foes, from androids to aliens to evil spirits. However, the fast pace of the manga and, in turn, the anime would eventually slow down its pace before introducing its biggest antagonist. Toriyama's inclusion of Majin Buu would be gradual, unintentionally changing the direction of the narrative for one specific character. Majin Buu wouldn't get introduced until chapter of the manga, 40 chapters after the last significant conflict of the Shonen comic.
