In the span of two episodes, Engage Kiss has proved that the seemingly perfect Bayron City is anything but a floating urban paradise on the Pacific Ocean. In fact, as Episode 2 clearly shows, Shu's home of Bayron is a metropolis plagued by corruption, corporate greed, violence and the presence of a huge underworld -- not to mention the constant threat of Demon Possssion. Episode 2 adds some fascinating cyberpunk themes to the story as well , giving it some common ground with Winter 's sci-fi series Tokyo 24th Ward. Episode 2 of Engage Kiss establishes that Bayron City is really two societies in one, with the glitzy business world being comfortably superimposed over the underworld of crime, drugs and Demon Possession. The mayor of Bayron City, a certain Hachisuka Masataka, delivers an optimistic and self-congratulatory speech one evening to a huge audience of admirers, and talks up the many perks of living and working in Bayron. Mayor Hachisuka mentions the city's high standard of living, its powerful economic status, the endless opportunities for entrepreneurs and the generous use of Orgonium, a fictional clean energy source. For society's successful elite, mayor Hachisuka's words ring true -- but for the desperate criminals hidden in the shadows, the speech cruelly mocks the suffering of Bayron City's underclass. Season 2? This is a core theme of cyberpunk, which is more than just "gritty sci-fi with an attitude". The underdogs have much to gain and little to lose in a sci-fi world of crime and desperation, and the same is true here in Engage Kiss.

The City of the Scorching Sun really bares its name this episode as Team Riko explores the new layer of the Abyss and escapes the dangers, as well as make discoveries. I really like episodes like these because it gives us a great look into the Abyss and what oddities and characteristics it has. The Abyss continues to amaze me with how wildly different each layer is, and this layer is really mesmerizing even with the danger. This was a great exploration episode as it was mostly Riko and the others looking around and making discoveries. Sitting over a sort of scrumptious meal of eggs from one of the creatures, Riko recounts sort of eating something similar back in the orphanage. I really liked this moment as Riko reminisced about her time there and her friends. So I thought it was really nice that Riko told Nanachi about her friends and even drawing them in the dirt.
