The show follows the trend of being nicer on reality shows. Gone are the days when a judge would harangue a contestant Gordon Ramsay not included.
Positivity is a great thing, especially for budding performers. Pleasantness can go a long way in setting a show up for success. Amiability can be cloying, though, and AGT 's overly positive vibe has chafed former judges like Howard Stern and former host Nick Cannon. Negativity has its place on reality shows, and AGT could spice up the veteran talent show by adding just a dash of criticism.
Contestants on AGT face both a panel of judges and a sizable audience. The show features a variety of acts from acrobats, to sword swallowing, to dance crews and even strange songs about cheese. The judge's panel rotates, but Howie Mandel is the longest-tenured judge. The judges critique the acts, but in most cases, they exist to heap effusive praise rather than offer advice. Not all negativity is bad.
Mocking or belittling contestants is wrong and simply does not pass as entertainment these days. This is a good change for reality television. Some types of negativity can be useful for a show, though. Constructive criticism, tense moments and authenticity all serve to better a show's storytelling. Positivity is nice, but if inauthentic it confuses the narrative of a show.
AGT could use negativity to add tension to the show. Currently, every act that is presented falls into either the "definitely going through" camp or the "included only for zaniness" camp. Borderline acts are a thing of the past, and true disagreements between judges are rare.
Acts where a contestant just was not quite ready yet used to make the cut on performance-based reality shows. This made the acts that did go through shine even more by comparison. AGT' s current format makes it seem as if every contestant in the building sails through the audition process. Showing more of the close calls would lend weight to the whole decision-making process.
Adding a dash of negativity would also give the judges something to do. All the judges and Crews consistently act as if they are having the time of their lives, and watching amazing acts is probably a great gig, but Cowell and Klum have both shown much more critical sides on other programs and Mandel has a sharp wit that is left unused in favor of puns.
AGT assembled a panel of experts, but normally they are little more than a guaranteed stamp of approval. While reverting to the days of Cowell's acerbic putdowns is not advisable, he is at his best when allowed to give thoughtful criticism to people with real talent.
The shift to an over-the-top positive tone comes with drawbacks. Chief among these costs are a loss of drama and making the judges ineffectual. Adding a bit of constructive criticism, not cruelty, could greatly aid the aging program. Read Next in television.
