Narumi Katou is a middle-aged man who suffers from the bizarre ZONAPHA Syndrome: a rare and inexplicable disease that causes its victims to endure severe seizures at random, with the only cure being to watch someone laugh. One day, during Narumi's part time job, a young boy with a giant suitcase fleeing from three adults runs into him. The boy introduces himself as Masaru Saiga, the new owner of the famous Saiga Enterprises following his father's recent death. However, other members of his family are trying to assassinate him and claim the fortune for themselves. Determined to save the child, Narumi helps Masaru escape and ends up fighting the pursuers, only to discover that they are sentient humanoid puppets with superhuman strength. As Narumi is about to lose, a white-haired girl suddenly joins the fray and swiftly summons yet another puppet from the boy's suitcase, claiming herself to be Shirogane, Masaru's guardian.

After inheriting the family fortune, eleven-year-old Masaru Saiga is targeted by kidnappers armed with bizarre and deadly puppets. He escapes once aided by circus employee Narumi Kato, but the kidnappers soon catch up with them. Shirogane are a people that feature in Karakuri Circus. Shirogane were a race of people that were created by the Chinese alchemist Bai Yin using the power of the Soft Stone. Long ago, he and his brother Bai Jin travelled from their native land of Qing to Prague where they looked to learn the secrets of alchemy. During this time, both of them had fallen in love with the same girl named Francine though she came to choose Yin which left his brother in a jealous rage. He kidnapped Francine with the goal of making her fall in love with him but she was devoted to her husband Bai Yin. During this time, they stayed in Quiberon in France but the villagers there blamed Francine for a sickness coming to their home and locked her up. She eventually was killed when a fire started and she was burnt to death in her cell with Jin having a piece of her hair left to remember her.
