Narcissism, self-loathing, secret crushes and longing for acceptance — all the trademarks of puberty are vividly evoked in beguiling hand-drawn visuals. Moreover, the film boasts a fresh and engaging approach in tackling the ubiquitous Japanese subject of school bullying from the perspective of the bully rather than the victim.
Sometimes, Yamada is so finely tuned to the adolescent mindset that the narrative becomes choked with conflicting emotions. Still, by narrating the entire story from the viewpoint of protagonist Shoya Ishida voiced by Miyu Irino , audiences can peer into his troubled, often defensive psyche, daring the them to continue to empathize with him even when his behavior is inexcusable.
The teacher encourages the class to befriend her, but after a few half-hearted efforts, everyone soon tires of having to communicate by writing in her notebook. While Shoya is consumed by anger from the start, the later part of the film slowly chips away at his outward persona to reveal his unconventional family background and other insecurities vis-a-vis his more popular classmates. The saga continues five years later, when the protagonists have gone on to different high schools.
Sadly, the reunion only rips open old wounds and reignite rivalries. In the manga, the group was brought together through a filmmaking project, which provides a stronger plot structure. The non-realist nature of animation makes it an ideal medium for conveying the sensual and sometimes scary experience of growing up.
The lightly electronic vibe from composer Kensuke Ushio concocts just the right mixture of peppy and romantic.

Six years later after meeting Nishimiya again and befriending her, he starts to gather new friends together, along with old ones he had during elementary school. Despite the changes in his life, Ishida still struggles to make up for what he did in the past. During grade school, Ishida loved to go on self-imposed adventures and played a lot, in what he described as a battle against "boredom". He always played pranks with living things or other kids. After Nishimiya transferred to their class, Ishida became more devious as he always mocked Nishimiya, which resulted in him receiving scoldings from his teachers often. After he became the scapegoat for the bullying of Nishimiya, Ishida was isolated from everyone and became a very introverted individual.

A young and bored Shoya Ishida Mayu Matsuoka and his elementary school classmates gasp at the arrival of the new transfer student Shouko Nishimiya Saori Hayami when they discover that she is hearing impaired. Ishida and his classmates start to bully Nishimiya for being different, targeting not only her but those who try and get close to her. A complaint is made to the school regarding the disappearance of several expensive hearing aids belonging to Nishimiya, at which point the entire class turns on Ishida, blaming him for all the bullying despite taking part themselves. As a result of the bullying, Nishimiya transfers away, and Ishida is made the new target. After years of being ostracized through the rest of elementary school and middle school, Ishida Miyu Irino has become a loner who is unable to look anyone in the eye.

The story examines the impact of bullying from two perspectives: that of Shoko Nishimiya -- a deaf girl who is a victim of relentless bullying in childhood -- and Shoya Ishida, the boy who bullied Shoko as a child. A big part of what makes A Silent Voice stand out as a film is that it examines its subject matter in a rather unconventional way. It does a lot more than set a former bully on a path toward redemption by reconciling with his former classmate; it also looks at some of the reasons bullying happens in the first place and how that impacts others who are caught in the crossfire.
