Remembering all the damage caused helped him to concentrate and save his hatred for the expected day; knowing he had a purpose helped him to keep moving forward and proudly carry out his friend's orders.

Suzaku felt as if the entire weight of the world fell on his shoulders. A helmet shouldn't have felt so heavy. But it did. It was like holding chains. Chains that he was willingly accepting. He knew very well what would happen the next day. He idly wondered if Lelouch was just like him, unable to sleep. Surely yes, Suzaku should have to kill him, but Lelouch is the one who would die. The urge to go see him came as soon as he forced it to leave.

He couldn't do it, it would be admitting weakness to his Emperor, and to do that so near to the end When he finished putting on the Zero suit that awkwardness returned. Suzaku was not Zero , and never would be because Lelouch is Zero. In front of the mirror Suzaku did not recognize himself, he had stopped doing it a long time ago.

Putting on the helmet was the last step, Kurugi Suzaku did not exist anymore. He ceased to exist since he died at the hands of Kallen. Probably long before.

Then he smiled. He was about to be killed. Why was he smiling? Suzaku's heart skipped a beat. The sword in his hands stopped. It was just inches from Lelouch's chest. He didn't need much to kill him. But he couldn't. Suzaku didn't want to kill him.

He could not end the life of the last person he cared about. His only friend. Suzaku straightened up. He could almost hear the crowd whispering in confusion. He threw his sword in the same direction as Lelouch's weapon was discarded. This time he could clearly hear the crowd yelling. Suzaku chose the worst time to be selfish, and he didn't care.
