We turned the corner and entered the alley. Immediately the wafting stench of urine hit our nostrils. Laura and I had discovered the joys street art in Toronto a few weeks earlier. My travels took me to Vancouver for work and I was exploring the city with a work colleague — who had long ago become used to my crazy ideas.

Under Stage 3 lockdown, a daily walk offers some small and sweet relief from the confines of the house. But in the south-west Victorian town of Portland, it also offers something else — the chance to see the latest masterpiece from local street artist Lincoln Roberts. Roberts has painted more than classic cartoon characters on old phone pit covers around the town.
Until we were in lockdown, I was only doing them occasionally. Roberts is a cartoon fanatic — his letter box is a full-scale replica of Futurama character Bender. The rest of the town is almost as enamoured with these nostalgic characters as he is to the point that he has been taking requests.
Roberts' street art is not some covert endeavour or vandalism masquerading as art, with the local authorities more than aware of the art project.
He takes the pit covers away to paint at home. So to ensure the sites of future artworks are safe, he replaces the pits with a wooden cover that reads "coming soon". Each one draws dozens of comments from people thanking him, wondering if they'll find the next Bart Simpson or Bugs Bunny on their daily walk.
It is clear the small bursts of joy these little artworks offer are even more welcome during the COVID pandemic. We acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Australians and Traditional Custodians of the lands where we live, learn, and work.

Swedish street artist Herr Nilsson likes to place innocent cartoon characters in dark situations, and this latest exhibition is no exception. Whether it's Winnie the Pooh on drugs, Princess Elsa from Frozen as an anarchist or Curious George smiling, gun in hand, having shot his owner, the images turn our impressions of favourite childhood characters on their heads. It's an obvious commentary on how everything is pure and innocent in cartoons, or how good and evil seems black and white in Disney, while in the real worlds it's not so clear cut.

Now, many of them are being celebrated in a massive warehouse near Los Angeles' Chinatown. The exhibition " Beyond the Streets " focuses on the studio work street artists created later in their careers. It has more 40,square feet of paintings, murals, photos, installations and even old video games. NPR gave "Beyond the Streets" a small amount of support as a media partner.

Kenny Random is a street artist hailing from Padova, Italy. Beyond that there is not much information on the artist aside from his fantastic artwork that can be seen on his personal website and Facebook. His older work primarily centers around a silhouetted man and his cat. They can be spotted roaming the city, injecting colour and traipsing over poorly scrawled graffiti.
